Math Lab Tutor - UAA Learning Commons

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Duties include tutoring students individually or in small groups. In-person and online tutoring hours are generally available. Maintain records and participate in training and workshops as needed. Other duties as assigned. Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evenings or weekends, as well as via Zoom. Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to work with a diverse population. Ability to effectively explain and demonstrate academic content concepts using a variety of teaching and rhetorical strategies.

Additional Job Duties:
• Follow all procedures and policies set by the Learning Commons.
• Be familiar with campus academic resources available to students.
• Report immediately to the coordinator when critical issues arise.
• Submit timesheets to the Learning Commons Director for approval as scheduled by the UAA Payroll Office.
•Ability to effectively explain and demonstrate basic mathematical concepts using a variety of teaching and rhetorical strategies.

Expectations:
• Act in a professional manner, and be sensitive to and respectful of student needs.
• Notify the Learning Commons Director and students in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel a session.
• Keep all information on students you work with confidential.
• Support and care about student success.

May be working remotely, in person, or a combination of those. Preferred Experience & Education:


To work in the Lower Division Math Lab applicants must have successfully completed at least one 200-level math course (preferably CALC I). Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Math courses tutored.

To work in the Upper Division Math Lab, applicants must have successfully completed (with B or higher) Calculus II & III. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 with a 3.0 average in Math courses tutored.

Prior tutoring experience is preferred, but not required. Training provided upon hire.

Qualifications:
• Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the current semester in the UA system.
• Ability to work a minimum of 4 hours of scheduled tutoring weekly.
• Prior enrollment in the course(s) to be tutored.
• Capacity to work with students with diverse backgrounds.
• Commitment to work the time promised.


Required Experience & Education:

To work in the Upper Division Math Lab, applicants must have successfully completed (with B or higher) Calculus II & III. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 with a 3.0 average in Math courses tutored.

Salary Information:

This is a part time, 9-month, non-exempt, student position. This position’s starting pay is $15.26/hour.
