Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
  •  The purpose of this position is to transfer inventory in the system from one location to another. This is accomplished by distributing materials and supplies around campus, logging, packing, and delivering packages and surplus items. Other duties include operating a forklift and motorized pallet jacks, maintaining inventory of supplies, and cleaning materials, picking up items off campus, and performing other duties as assigned.
  • Incumbents exercise decision making and independent judgement due to the broad requirements of the materials handling operation. Expediters may be responsible for items in high volume, of a high dollar amount. Incumbents are expected to handle fragile equipment, supplies and hazardous materials, such as chemicals or gases, when necessary. Expediters ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies and promote workplace safety.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
  • Receives and unloads incoming materials and compares information on packing slip with purchase order to verify accuracy of shipment; may process return shipments from customers.
  • Sorts, counts, packages, labels, insures, unpacks, stores, and/or logs inventory which is shipped or received. Inspects shipments for damages or defects; records discrepancies or damages and notifies supervisor and/or purchasing personnel.
  • Delivers items to requisitioning departments and obtains authorized signatures for accepted items. May trace lost shipments and/or customer claims of lost shipments, initiates proof of delivery documents.
  • May maintain department database, prepare routine reports, and file shipping/receiving records.
  • Operates material handling equipment such as dolly, pallet jack, and/or forklift in loading and unloading supplies and equipment; may operate company vehicle to deliver shipments; may assist in routine maintenance of equipment and shipping area; may lock warehouse and set alarms.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  • Transports high technology, high dollar cost equipment, laboratory supplies, office supplies, furniture, and hazardous materials to customers; secures cargo properly and safely with weight evenly distributed.
  • Participates in ordering or purchasing standard stock items, such as recommending additions or deletions to standard stock items or ordering replenishments within established procedures and limits.
  • Conducts annual physical inventory.
  • Develops and maintains a positive service orientation
  • Interact professionally with departmental members and coworkers from other organizational units of the University and the general public.
  • Focus on Customer Service:
    • Focuses on customer’s needs and expectations. (Customers can be students, external constituents, Employees, or university guests.) * Respectfully ascertains customer’s needs and determines appropriate response. * Promptly responds by providing requested information, takes appropriate action, or refers customer to appropriate individual or department. * If further actions need to be taken, advises customers of realistic timeframes for a response to their request. * Follows up with customers on outstanding requests in a timely manner. * Tactfully explains to customers why their needs and/or expectations cannot be met if the university does not provide the requested information or services.

  • Awareness of commercial shipping methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of receiving, tracking, and distributing materials, supplies, and equipment that includes knowledge of automated or computerized system operations.
  • Knowledge of safety practices.
  • Knowledge of the equipment and materials common to mail processing assignments.
  • Skill in postal or warehouse methods and procedures including sorting, checking, counting, and verifying numbers.
  • Skill in records maintenance involving receiving, stocking and delivery of goods.
  • Skill in the use of equipment and materials common to shipping and receiving.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Work requires a level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
  • One (1) year experience. Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Work requires a level of knowledge equivalent to four (4) years of high school or equivalency.
