As one of the oldest forms of applied science and engineering, Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Material Science and Engineering (MSE) was founded in 1906. Since then, our field has broadened to include all classes of materials from ceramics and polymers to semiconductors and biological materials. Whereas early eras of civilization were widely identified by human's ability to work with new material (Stone Age, Bronze Age), today our abilities and projects span a variety of materials and combine everything from physics and chemistry to civil and electrical engineering.

We are currently searching for a highly motivated Materials Characterization Facility Specialist to join MSE. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by supervising an array of instruments in the MSE Department's Materials Characterization Facility (MCF), and other such tasks as assigned to you.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the operation of MCF and providing basic instrument maintenance for the facility.

  • Training users and supervising lab classes.

  • Writing and maintaining user guides and SOP's.

  • Other duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate:

  • Excellent analytical, technical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to multitask and function competently in a team environment

  • Ability to instruct and supervise labs

  • Willingness to travel as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Ideal candidates will have experience in Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) and will have the ability to develop expertise in other areas of materials characterization.
