Job Summary

The Materials and Sterilization Technician is responsible for overall coordination of dental materials inventory and expenditures and sterilization duties. Materials responsibilities include ordering materials, maintaining paper and electronic files of goods ordered and received, prepares paperwork for vendor payments and keeps accounts up to date. Sterilization responsibilities include wash, bag, and sterilize dental instruments, organize clean instruments, label cassettes and instruments as needed. Comply with federal and state regulations (OSHA, HIPAA, DPH, AAMI, ANSI). 


Position Description

  • Washes, bags, and sterilizes dental instruments.
  • Operates washers and autoclaves with autonomy.
  • Organizes clean instruments; labels cassettes and instruments as needed.
  • Runs and records daily and weekly washer and autoclaves testing.
  • Coordinates dental materials inventory management and related expenditures.
  • Orders all dental materials and maintains paper and electronic files on goods ordered and received.
  • Sets inventory supply par levels.
  • Prepares paperwork for vendor payments and is responsible for ensuring vendor accounts are up to date.
  • Partnering with the Materials, Lab, and Sterilization team, evaluates equipment maintenance needs, performs daily technical and materials repairs.
  • Complies with federal and state regulations (OSHA, HIPAA, DPH, AAMI, ANSI). 
  • Contributes to the mission and vision of HSDM and models the School’s core values in all facets of the work. Promotes a customer service environment, including providing support to multiple constituents including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 3 -5 years of related work experience. 

  • Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to work on-site and travel to/from the Longwood clinic as necessary. 
  • Strong attention to detail with superior time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to train others and communicate effectively and professionally in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with professionalism and a customer service mindset. 
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 20 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check at hire.
  • Certified sterilization technician and/or trained dental assistant with a minimum of one year experience in laboratory work.
  • Experience working in a sterile processing department. 
  • Knowledge of dental and medical terminology.

  • Working Conditions

  • Incumbent is primarily assigned to Cambridge but serves at the Longwood site as necessary for performance of the essential responsibilities of the role.
  • Will require standing and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Requires lifting and carrying objects up to 20 pounds without assistance.

  • Additional Information

    Compensation: Grade 051, HUCTW. Typically a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. The amount will vary based on the position and the candidate’s relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum.

    Work Format Details

    This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
