Position Summary
The Pagliarini Lab at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is seeking a mass spec specialist to assist with mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics applications for exploring mitochondrial biology. In particular, we are interested in candidates with ample experience in designing and executing proteomics and metabolomics experiments, preferably with Thermo Fisher Orbitrap-based instruments, including: sample preparation, assay development, instrumentation care and troubleshooting, database searching, and knowledge of software interfaces. The scientist in this position will work closely with other members of the Pagliarini Laboratory on collaborative projects exploring mitochondrial systems biology, protein biochemistry, and metabolic pathways. https://pagliarinilab.org


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees and plans optimal utilization of resources for mass spectrometric analyses of biomolecules using current technologies.
  • Coordinates sample preparation and method development for LC-MS analysis of analytes from biological samples.
  • Deploys and oversees quality/control protocols for spectral interpretation for structural elucidation of endogenous and synthetic biological compounds using manual and software-based tools.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for complex analytical workflows for proteins and metabolites.
  • Maintains a laboratory information management system for sample registration and tracking.
  • Trains personnel in new methods, instrumentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Provides laboratory director with proficiency evaluations of staff performance in new methods and instrumentation.
  • Researches and recommends new methods and procedures to maintain current capabilities, quality and standards.
  • Evaluates new equipment and technology for mass spectrometry.
  • Provides formal project management for evaluation of new technologies, development of new methods and delivery of data to collaborators and users.
  • May participate in the hiring of personnel.


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry/Biology or associated field.
  • Record of inter-disciplinary collaboration and participation in team science, experience in project management and technical supervision of mass spectrometrists and experience in training technicians in mass spectrometric methods.


Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in analytical chemistry or a related area with 8 years of experience (including 6 years of practical experience in the use of mass spectrometry) or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 14 years.
  • Previous supervisory experience.

Salary Range
$62,200.00 - $112,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
