Position Summary
This individual will create, develop/design, manage, and evaluate marketing and communications creative content for the Department of Athletics & Recreation—inclusive of both recreation and varsity sports programs/facilities. They will also identify strategies and initiatives that enhance the Department’s brand awareness and reputation in both internal and external channels and drive success of recreation and varsity sports program objectives.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides high level design support for a wide variety of platforms and applications including, but not limited to, digital signage, printed marketing collateral, program guides, annual reports, and dynamic video board content.
  • Develops marketing, communications, branding, and social media strategies. Directs implementation of communications. Participates in development of annual marketing plan, success metrics, and storytelling.
  • Produces & directs live events and oversee the day-to-day operations and planning for event presentation including video board; create & execute game scripts designed to engage fans; assists in the management of community outreach programs and mascot activities.
  • Enhances the storytelling and brand awareness of Athletics & Recreation through the creation of compelling video content, with an emphasis on Student Affairs core values alignment and key performance indicators.
  • Marketing counsel: Provides effective and respected marketing counsel to senior leadership and department personnel. Keeps abreast of social media/digital best practices and provide benchmarks and analyze data from social media and mobile initiatives to inform future communications planning and other decision-making within the department.
  • Supports and participates in collaborative efforts for the department, including various committees or special initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree, such as MBA or Master’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, Management or Marketing.
  • Five or more years of progressive responsibility in the area of marketing communications.
  • Experience working in teams.
  • Experience working in a complex organization.
  • Ability to identify, develop and maintain relationships in support of educational programs and initiatives.
  • Experience in higher education sector.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across groups; ability to interact well with program directors, faculty and client stakeholders.
  • Three years of experience in marketing or brand management, including proven experience leading high-impact strategic marketing planning, campaign development, to market execution and media design planning and placement.
  • Advanced computer and presentation competencies, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing the broad spectrum of social media and digital communications channels in support of an organization or for a program for which new forms of communications are a strategic priority.
  • Strong writing skills; ability to distill complex information into student‐friendly messaging; experience with AP style.
  • Self‐starter with strong attention to detail; well‐organized with ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Energy and creativity.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Interest in storytelling through writing, design and video.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills are a must.
  • Tech savvy, proficiency of project software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, project sharing tools, etc.).
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively as well as communicate thoughts collaboratively and build consensus.
  • Self‐starter, strong attention to detail; well‐organized with ability to manage multiple projects and time effectively.
  • Knowledge of current marketing practices, including digital/online marketing strategies and social media.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of communication design, typography and a good eye for aesthetics.
  • Ability to adapt and maintain flexibility within a rapidly changing environment while showing initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgement.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, business administration, English, or related field.
  • Three years of progressive responsibility in related area.

Salary Range
$50,500.00 - $86,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
