JOB SUMMARY

​​UConn's University Communications team is seeking an experienced Marketing Content Specialist & Project Manager (Managing Editor) to spearhead the development of university marketing and communication materials. This position manages the development of many of the University’s marketing and communication materials in print, web, and other digital assets to disseminate messaging, reinforce initiatives, and position UConn as a leader among competitors. This role develops publicity and marketing strategies and writes copy to aid campus partners in achieving their goals and creates effective content for target audiences.​​ 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises preparation of and prepares marketing materials, including developing ideas and concepts, writing and editing copy, proofreading, and ensuring specifications, timelines, and deadlines are met.  
  • Manages the development of and produces materials that promote the University to prospective students and their families, developing strategy and ensuring that a variety of print and digital projects are eye-catching, up-to-date, consistent, and on-message. 
  • Serves as a web manager for the University, working with leadership to obtain information, collaborating with web developers and graphic designers to determine how to organize and layout content on sites, and writing and updating site content as needed. 
  • Develops content and writes and edits copy for websites, banners, postcards, brochures, videos, advertisements, and more. 
  • Proofreads and edits written copy for own and others’ projects, checking for accuracy, appropriate tone, grammar, style, and readability. 
  • Works with graphic designers to plan the most appropriate graphic, illustrative, and/or photographic work for materials and websites, requesting photo shoots and providing content for infographics when needed. 
  • Maintains effective working relationships with various departments on campus, including but not limited to Admissions, Athletics, and Schools/Colleges, as well as external constituents such as print vendors, advertising executives, and creative freelancers.  
  • Report, research, and write stories using knowledge of the target audience to inform and engage faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the greater population about UConn initiatives and news, as assigned. 
  • Maintains awareness of trends in higher education marketing, communications, and branding to develop and implement strategies to effectively reach the University’s target market. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
  • 4 to 5 years of experience as a writer, editor, or equivalent.
  • Evidence of masterful writing ability, as demonstrated by writing samples; ability to adapt writing style for different media and audiences including for web and video scripts.
  • Ability to meet and enforce deadlines, take initiative, work independently to carry out complex assignments, and willingness to work flexible hours. 
  • Superior communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills and ability to make sound judgments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 5 years of experience as a writer, editor, or equivalent. 
  • Higher education marketing or communications experience.
  • Experience developing website structure and content.
  • Experience editing websites in WordPress.
  • Understanding of metadata, accessibility, and/or SEO.

This is a permanent, full-time position with a primary work location at the Storrs Campus.
