Job Description

The Graduate College is looking for an enthusiastic, talented and organized Marketing Content Specialist and Editor. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Marketing Content Specialist and Editor leads all phases of content creation, from concept development through production, for electronic and print materials, including news stories that support the goals of the Graduate College. This individual will write original content, proofread content and organize materials of a complex nature. The position will confer with staff members regarding story ideas, editorial content, changes and revisions; review and correct webpages, marketing materials and presentations to ensure correct grammar, consistency in style, readability and design; and research content to ensure accuracy.
Business hours for the Graduate College are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ASU is a diverse enterprise with a wide variety of work and learning modes, locations and a commitment to sustainability, innovation and employee work-life balance. Salary Range

$51,840 - $65,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops, and produces creative, high-quality copywriting and editorial content for various Graduate College audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public) across multiple channels and publications (e.g., marketing collateral, news stories, press releases, websites, video scripts, op-ed, the Graduate Insider blog and e-newsletter) ensuring college goals and deadlines are achieved 
  • Responsible for writing Graduate College marketing and editorial content that complies with AP, ASU brand writing style and Graduate College requirements
  • Writes and edits website copy, emails, social media, advertising, and other marketing collateral materials to tell the college's story, drive event attendance, inform constituents of new initiatives and attract donors
  • Conceives and produces original optimized editorial content including news stories, press releases and blog articles, including stories for ASU News and blog posts for the Graduate Insider
  • Assists in the development of the monthly Graduate Insider email
  • Conducts interviews with students, alumni, faculty, staff, subject matter experts and community members to write news, blog stories and op-eds
  • Writes clear captions and alt tags to accompany digitally published content.
  • Edits or rewrites existing copy; reads and proofreads marketing, editorial and training materials for accuracy, style, and readability, recommending changes where necessary
  • Edits and maintains content for the website and coordinates content updates with unit staff. This includes HTML tagging, applying formats and styles to text with multiple levels of headings, bullets and other features
  • Collaborates with Marketing and Communication team members and marketing project owners within the college to continually hone the brand story and optimize marketing content to further the goals of the Graduate College
  • Actively participates in brainstorming and assists in identifying opportunities and leverages research and course content to develop editorial and marketing content into multi-touch, multi-channel plans including email, PR, social media, events and more
  • Demonstrates marketing content expertise in all duties and serves as an expert within the Graduate College, providing advice to college staff, including the Director and Vice Provost and Dean on effective writing practices, editorial and public relations content.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with Marketing and Communications team members, project managers, creative resources and other outside vendors to accomplish project goals and content needs
  • Recommends process improvements to Director, Marketing and Communications
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field AND five years of content marketing, marketing communications, marketing project management or related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternate ways to inform and entertain via written, oral and visual media
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques for quality video production and shot composition
  • Skill in problem solving, conflict management and decision making
  • Skill in verbal, visual and written communications including the ability to express ideas in a clear and logical manner with strong attention to detail
  • Skill in print journalism, business writing, copy editing, and publication technology.
  • Skill in exercising a high degree of judgment and diplomacy
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with professional organizations, media, university administrators, faculty and staff
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication
  • Skill in organization, prioritizing workload, and time management

  • Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to tight deadlines which often includes conflicting priorities

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to walk or travel moderate distances to perform work. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
