The Marketing and Communications Manager supports the recruitment, retention and outreach of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as well as brand strategy, marketing and priority communications initiatives. This position will plan, develop and write creative, high-quality communications and strategic plans for The College’s wide array of audiences, including faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students and the general public, using multiple digital and print communications mediums. Reporting to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for The College, the Marketing and Communications Manager works closely with The College Dean’s Office, as well as academic units and partners across the university to support ASU’s enterprise communication initiatives.
This position is located on ASU's Tempe Campus and provides opportunities for remote work (up to 2 days a week) after the initial onboarding period.

Salary Range

$67,500 - $77,500 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops and writes creative, high-quality copy and communications strategic plans for The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public) using multiple digital and print communications mediums (e.g. email, print, web, social media).
  • Plans, develops, and writes creative, high-quality communications and strategic plans for associated high-profile university-wide and divisional initiatives.
  • Serves as the managing editor and writer for The College Dean’s Office student recruitment, outreach and donor/alumni engagement campaigns.
  • In coordination with graphic designers, videographers and web developers, packages copy, images, multimedia, quotes and more to create a final product.
  • Works independently and collaboratively with stakeholders across the university to identify and coordinate opportunities to create on-brand, on-strategy compelling creative work and long-form stories.
  • Develops and implements guidelines and best practices for the college and all academic units and center’s websites, social media and advertising, as well as alumni and recruitment print communications. 
  • Owns and champions the ASU and The College brand guidelines and ensures that clients and academic units adhere to them. 
  • Creates and maintains editorial calendars and content plans. Conducts content audits and gap analyses. Recommends strategies for improvement.
  • Supervises the marketing and communications coordinator and is the primary contact for editing and pitch generation.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with team members, stakeholders and project owners to help define objectives, needs and outcomes.
  • Collaborates, consults and actively participates in new idea generation, brainstorming concepts and making recommendations for creative ways to accomplish goals. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field AND five (5) years of experience in a public relations/marketing role; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a master’s degree in marketing, English, business, journalism or communications.
  • Experience working in Higher Education, creative services or an agency setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of writing in AP style, media relations, pitching stories and content development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of editing in AP style, including editing workflow best practices and experience with both substantive and copy editing. 
  • Project management experience: managing multiple projects simultaneously; working effectively and efficiently with individuals and teams within a diverse environment; and using project management tools such as Teamwork.
  • Experience in researching and collecting information, including interviewing skills, web research skills and other intelligence gathering techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic content, communication and marketing principles.
  • Experience in using analytical skills in transforming business insights into strategic planning.
  • Experience in using content curation skills, transforming content across platforms to meet different audience needs; ability to visualize the best way to present content.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in using client relationship skills, being self-directed and in taking initiatives to completion.
  • Experience in using creative and critical thinking skills, goal setting and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web content best practices.
