The Communications Specialist provides leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of internal and external marketing and communications efforts for the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). Increases visibility by planning, managing and executing news and information strategies. Leads the development and implementation of long-range strategic plans for innovative delivery of communications and marketing, including publication programs, public relations, print and graphic media, video and web communications, digital and social media, and management of special events. Writes and distributes news release items. Manages the content and quality of the print and electronic communications from the department office. Works with faculty and researchers to collect and prepare information for professional and media dissemination. Leads efforts to improve the visibility of BME, reaching all requisite audiences. Creates, edits and procures brochures, posters and promotional flyers. Produces and oversees updates and maintenance of the BME website and their content using a content management system with technical assistance from the college and Office of Research (OR) IT personnel. Manages BME’s social media presence to leverage brand-recognition. Assists with development efforts and acts as liaison with media personnel within the college, and/or the university. Prepares announcements, web-documents or related materials for mini-conferences, and alumni or student events. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student communications assistant(s) and front desk students.  Plans, coordinates and organizes conferences, workshops and special events as assigned by the Chair.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, arts administration, journalism, english or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 2 years of relevant experience required. experience in writing, editing, publicity, marketing, publication production and/or disseminating news releases; experience in conceptualizing and writing technology or research stories for print or online media; skilled in desktop publishing; exceptional time and project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects with changing priorities; knowledge of and experience with social media and email marketing.

Desired

Experience with electronic communication, fundraising, and marketing; basic photography; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; experience with website content management systems; previous supervisory experience; knowledge of electrical engineering; excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and commitment to quality strongly desired.


Additional Information:

The target hiring range for this job profile is $49,800 - $66,400. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
