Position Summary
The Marine Scientist Senior will play a leading role in the high profile, nationwide TRAP Program focusing on derelict trap data collection, synthesis, and analysis to inform policy development. These efforts will span the following areas:
1) quantifying drivers of trap loss and derelict trap accumulation;
2) assessing ecological and economic impacts of derelict traps, with a focus on analyses that integrate across systems and consideration of plastic pollution contribution;
3) exploring novel data sets and analytical approaches that allow for cross-system evaluations, data extrapolations, and impact assessment in data-poor regions;
4) advancing derelict trap data collection standards and data sharing platforms or products; and
5) assessing potential policy solutions.
The successful candidate will be expected to synthesize and analyze data collected through the TRAP program to advance the understanding on derelict trap causes, rates, distribution, and impacts in the United States to inform meaningful derelict fishing gear policies that reduce gear loss and mitigate harmful effects. The candidate will also be expected and supported in presenting and publishing the results of research at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Must have valid driver’s license; some travel within coastal Virginia to stakeholders, VMRC, and other locations will be required

Required Qualifications
EDUCATION: MS in Marine Science, Ecology, Marine Ecology, Fisheries Science, Quantitative Ecology, or related field, or comparable education and experiernce.
COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong quantitative, data management, and modeling skills
  • Broad knowledge of coastal and estuarine systems
  • Ability to independently design and conduct experiments and analyze data
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, and critical thinking ability
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated computational abilities using R, Python, and/or ESRI software (ArcGIS)
  • Evidence of scientific productivity including peer review publications
  • Experience in crustacean ecology
  • Experience with economic analysis and/or coupled human-natural system models
  • Experience with analyzing large datasets
