Description
We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated people to join us for our Summer Education Internship Program. This is a fun and exciting opportunity to gain experience in the field of informal environmental education. You will interact with and inspire the public to take action to protect marine life while also gaining skills in aquarium upkeep. Education interns work with our educators at the Blue Ocean Discovery Center on Hampton Beach to inspire the public to protect the marine environment while introducing them to some of the Gulf of Maine’s coastal marine life! In the center there are two display tanks and one touch tank with live animals as well as some other interpretive exhibits. At the center you will learn how to educate people of all ages in an informal environment, handle and care for a variety of aquatic animals, lead public beach clean ups and serve as a positive role model for future ocean stewards. Mandatory intern meetings will take place weekly and include the research interns. Meetings may consist of paper discussions, guest speakers, and additional skill-learning. All interns will also participate in field trips to expose them to other areas of marine science and/or conservation. Each intern is also asked to create and complete their own summer research project with the help of their internship supervisor. In addition, all interns will present their project at our summer Blue Ocean Intern Research Symposium, which has an audience consisting of the general public, Blue Ocean staff and volunteers, and fellow members of the scientific community. Opportunities to participate in specialty outreach programs such as our off-site whale program with our 65-ft inflatable fin whale as well as join a whale watching trip to learn about Blue Ocean’s whale research program may also be available.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be outgoing, enthusiastic, detail oriented and have a strong desire both to learn and teach. A desire to practice or improve public speaking skills is essential. Background knowledge of biology is helpful, but prior experience is not necessary. Although all training is provided and weekly meetings are required, we are looking for motivated individuals who can learn on their own and work independently in addition to working with our staff. This internship is geared towards upperclassmen undergraduates and recent graduates. Others may apply but those who are Juniors, Seniors or recent college graduates will have priority.
