This position works with the Association Senior Resource Educator and Citizen Science Coordinator on various educational and field-based marine resource conservation projects. They will primarily assist the Senior Resource Educator and Citizen Science Coordinator with the volunteer horseshoe-crab spawning surveys, the community shellfish education outreach programs, the shellfish aquaculture internship program, and other field restoration and education activities. They will assist with educating and coordinating the volunteers, assist with various telemetry-based fieldwork, including data retrieval/maintenance, and various laboratory and field-based shellfish aquaculture and water quality programs. The shellfish aquaculture program requires working with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist at the grow-out facility in Huntington (Goldstar Battalion) and Stony Brook University (Flax Pond and Marine Animal Disease Lab). The Marine Resource Educator will compile and assist with data entry and aid in capturing photos, video, and other digital media at field sites and public events to educate the public. Aid in disseminating website, blog postings, and social media posts supporting the citizen science and education programs.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or equivalent, plus 6 months transferrable program/functional experience.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Experience working with the public and in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.
  • Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives
  • Ability to work outdoors performing various types of marine activities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery – 75%

  • Present existing educational programs as needed to program volunteers and community leaders as defined in various citizen science and education program plans (e.g., horseshoe crab survey, shellfish interns, Peconic Estuary Partnership, etc.).
  • Interact with program participants and assist in educational programs as needed to support other habitat restoration or shellfish-related programming.
  • Present program information to the public via various forms of media.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource in assigned programming for staff and participants, providing standard responses.
  • Assist community agencies as requested or required to facilitate programs and activities.
  • Assist in the distribution of educational materials and participate in various outreach events.
  • This position will require transporting program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Applied Research – 10%

  • Assist with collecting scientific data for horseshoe crab surveys, acoustic telemetry, laboratory and field-based shellfish projects, and water quality, including monitoring and recording water quality data and collecting water samples for analysis (or other environmental measures).
  • Assist with organizing data, quality control measures, and summarizing data.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Management – 5%

  • Support volunteer management which includes:
  • Ensuring volunteer procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with recruitment of volunteers for various citizen science programs.
  • Assist with screening, orientation, and guidance to volunteers according to established practices and procedures.
  • Utilize appropriate policies and procedures to resolve operational conflicts.
  • Assist in the implementation of communication strategies.
  • May give guidance to volunteers and staff.
  • Provide non-complex administrative tasks in guiding the implementation of the program.

Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • Assist in coordinating volunteer activities with supervisors, field technicians, and other partner organizations.
  • Assist in taking photos and video footage at events and fieldwork sites and using digital media.
  • Assist in compiling data relative to volunteer registration and communication.
  • Assist with coordinating program correspondence and communications in support of programming efforts.
  • Compile data from program participants based on existing frameworks and guidelines.
  • Assist in creating and coordinating effective marketing and educational materials under the guidance of Senior Extension Resource Educator in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to, print media, news media, social media, web media, and multi-media efforts.
  • Perform record keeping, data management, and program reports as required by the Association and contract requirements.
  • Help organize, maintain, and update communication materials for volunteers.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks to support the development of educational programming.
  • Maintaining spreadsheets, collecting data, entering data, maintaining volunteer databases.
  • Assist with coordinating equipment, vehicles, and boats associated with various projects.
  • Compile information as requested to prepare reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as necessary.

  • In cooperation with Supervisor or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
