1 year appointment with possible extension through December 31, 2026.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

Prioritizes project goals: 1) Remove derelict fishing gear (DFG) and other forms of large marine debris from high-impact areas within the CINMS and the CHIS Region; 2) Identify new accumulation sites and conduct removals on identified high-impact beaches; 3) Engage with the local community and CSUCI student population; and 4) Sustainably dispose of debris.

Coordinates logistics and planning, conducts assessments, leads removals, manages grant-related data, handles project reporting, budget management, and manages outreach. Operates in compliance with all procedures, protocols, and federal regulations. This position is based on the mainland, with requirements for overnight island trips.

Coordination, Communication, & Outreach – Collaborates and works with individuals at all levels across a wide network of partnerships to coordinate logistics and planning. These interactions include attending and conducting meetings and establishing and maintaining relationships with cooperating agencies. Oversees debris removal volunteers in the field and paid student assistants. Communicates the mission and procedures of the grant to partners, SRIRS, and other relevant campus departments (i.e. CI Art). In coordination with external and campus partners, facilitates and leads programmatic outreach, education, educational programs and events.

Logistics/Planning – Assists in planning and coordinating logistical support for debris removal trips including scheduling of facilities, transportation, and arrangements, as well as the maintenance of project supplies and equipment. Responsible for ensuring safe operations in the field.

Debris Assessments & Removals – Uses NOAA Marine Debris protocols to assess existing sites and new site selection. Implements and manages debris removal operations, including debris collection, transport, storage, disposal, and documentation.

Data Management and Reporting – Responsible for grant-related database management, storage, and organization (including GIS files). Manages data collection tools and equipment. Responsible for data analysis and report writing as required by the grant and SRIRS Program.

Performs other related duties as required in support of the marine debris project.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

A bachelor’s degree in a related field (including but not limited to biology, environmental science, geology, marine biology) is required. Must have at least 2 years of experience working in a remote field setting involving research or service activities equivalent to those planned for the research station and ideally have 4WD driving experience or the willingness to learn those skills. Familiarity and experience with helicopter operations and small vessel operations in an ocean environment is desirable. Given the unique cultural resources of the Channel Islands Archipelago, incumbent must have a general understanding of principles, legal regulations and practices related to cultural resources. Advanced first aid or Emergency Medical Technician certification is desirable, basic CPR/First Aid is required. Experience with marine debris collection and research is desirable.

Must have a demonstrated ability to independently perform day-to-day activities under general supervision. Strong organization, communication, and problem-solving skills are critical, along with demonstrated maturity, accountability, and sound judgement. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and manage logistics for multiple groups of people simultaneously and effective collaboration with diverse groups. Ability to apply a wide range of policies and procedures. Thorough knowledge of and skills in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to work effectively with diverse partners. Demonstrated ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages and ability to draft and compose correspondence and standard reports. Demonstrated experience in independently handling multiple work priorities and projects. Demonstrated ability in operations, and supervision of staff or volunteers in a remote field environment preferred. Demonstrated ability to communicate at an effective and professional level, both written and orally. Demonstrated ability in database management and budget tracking.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift 40 pounds and hike extended distances in support of field activities. Must be prepared to live in university provided facilities while on Santa Rosa Island and more rustic accommodations on other islands for marine debris removal trips of 3 days to 1 week in duration and occurring a few times per calendar year. Position requires flexibility with regards to work schedule and hours including travel to the Channel Islands, working weekends, evenings, in inclement weather and challenging conditions, and overnight stays on the islands with advanced notice.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Hiring Range: $1,759 - $2,006 per month (based on 20 hours per week).
