    Position description

The Environmental Markets Lab (emLab) is seeking a highly motivated data scientist to conduct research and analyses on a variety of projects investigating the environmental, economic, and social implications of offshore wind development related to West Coast fisheries. The research projects include, but are not limited to, developing a database related to existing marine spatial closures and other changes that may have impacted historical fisheries outcomes; estimating the historical impact of spatial closures on harvest volume and/or value; identifying historical impacts of climate change on the California Current; assessing potential future fisheries outcomes under climate change and offshore wind development scenarios; identifying potential strategies for mitigating expected negative impacts; and other research tasks related to marine fisheries, climate change, and offshore wind development. The data scientist will be responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing, processing, synthesizing, and visualizing spatial and administrative data; developing spatial datasets; conducting statistical and econometric analyses; contributing to the drafting of academic manuscripts and presentations; and developing efficient and reproducible workflows to implement best practices for data acquisition and analysis.

The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills, an ability to work and problem solve independently, a creative and solutions-oriented mindset, and the ability to effectively communicate scientific results to stakeholders, scientists, and policymakers.
