Manufacturing Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Engineering Division has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer to apply manufacturing industry expertise and excellent interpersonal skills to be the resource for internal project managers/engineers and external vendors. This role calls for proactive, independent engineers that serve in a cross functional role between design engineers, fabrication, testing and vendors.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Coordinate the fabrication of scientific experimental equipment for government-sponsored national research programs and facilities. 

  • Design engineering of test support equipment and customized tooling (e.g. adapters and fixtures, equipment installation and facility integration, equipment reconfiguration.).

  • Relevant experience with parametric 3D CAD modeling software.

  • Support established performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing. 

  • Support the implementation of manufacturing and quality procedures including non-conformance and deviation reporting; oversee engineering change order process. 

  • Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment. 

  • Participate in cross-functional teams of procurement, engineering, and management stakeholders for vendor oversight and issue tracking.

  • Review vendor-generated design and end-item documentation/data packages for data integrity and completeness.

  • Participate in the creation of test and inspection documentation in support of QA/QC plans for specific jobs.

  • Collaborate with technical staff to assist in identification and resolution of issues with QC process, QC documentation, and technical issues with hardware. 

  • Track and report on material location and status during all phases from fabrication to final acceptance and handoff primarily by means of inventory management software.

  • Assist with the creation, implementation, and facilitation of a project-specific program for managing traceable calibration of laboratory tools and equipment.

  • Facilitate material inspection, substitution, standardization, rework, salvage, utilization, and economical procurement of parts and equipment. 

  • May infrequently travel to vendors and trade shows, as appropriate. 

  • Familiarity with dimensional metrology and GD&T.

  • Familiarity with Product Data Management software.

 

What is Required:

Level 2

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree plus at least 3 years of experience in liaison/coordinator role with procurement staff, or overall equivalent experience.

  • Excellent and effective communication/interpersonal skills, meeting facilitation, organization and detail orientation with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects. 

  • Experience reading, understanding, and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings.

  • Knowledge of the technical aspects and considerations of mechanical/manufacturing related items to determine appropriate procurements for various projects.

  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing and assembly practices and processes. 

 

Level 3 

(in addition to the requirements of the Level 2)

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar technical degree and minimum of 5 years of related experience or equivalent work experience.

  • Advanced knowledge reading, understanding, and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings.

  • Significant experience in the technical aspects and considerations of mechanical/manufacturing related items to determine appropriate procurements for various projects.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in R&D environment.

  • Relevant experience with inventory management in production environments of any volume.

  • Relevant experience with document creation and content reuse via document markup languages such as DITA.

  • Write specifications for technically complex or challenging procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements. 

  • Analysis of large data sets.

 

Salary:

Level 2:
The full salary range of this position is between $7,693.00 to $12,978.00 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8,653.00 to $10,576.00 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Level 3:

The full salary range of this position is between $9,409.00 to $15,876.00 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,585.00 to $12,937.00 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
