Job Description

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts values the importance of data and is looking to add a new role of Manager of Planning and Analysis. Under administrative direction, this position will provide analytical support to the Institute and its critical academic, financial, and operational decisions. The position will brainstorm and create analyses to enhance our strategic planning, furthering financial education, improving policy, and decision-making support, using ASU’s various tools, methods and techniques.

Essential Duties

  • Performs complex and advanced research analysis techniques, to understand current performance, analyze trends, and to make recommendations to improve outcomes.
  • Creates visualizations that are easy to interpret and access by those in non-analytical roles.
  • Prepares or coordinates preparation of reports; analyzes and interprets statistics, financial data, and management planning data for predicting resource needs and developing long range plans.
  • Prepares presentations to stakeholders and university administration.
  • Leads the collection and analysis of data for Institute-wide projects such as financial modeling, space utilization, student enrollment growth predictions, budget and forecasting analyses, employee personnel metrics, retention and recruitment, inventory assessment, developing various dashboards, etc.
  • Uses predictive modeling, statistics, trend analysis and other data analysis techniques to collect, explore, and identify the right data to be analyzed from internal and external sources.
  • Securely collects, cleanses, standardizes, transforms and stores data from various sources ensuring data integrity.
  • Maintains broad awareness of current trends in data collection and organization, data preservation, and numeric data analysis by participation in appropriate professional activities and contributing to research in the field: to implement procedures and technologies that assure the long-term sustainability and accessibility of datasets.
  • Utilizes various computer programs and software to perform data computation, statistical analysis and other data manipulation activities.
  • Represents the department/college and serves on various department and university committees.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Future potential to provide oversight of staff including coordination of activities, managing and coaching staff to build skills in interpreting and reporting data analysis results to ensure adherence with stated outcome, timeframes and standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and five (5) years of related administrative/data analysis experience which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education
  • Understanding of financial terminology that is applicable to business in higher education
  • Experience with the following skills: data warehousing and extracting (Amazon Workspaces, SQL, Alteryx, etc.); data analysis and modeling (R, Python, SQL, etc.); data visualization using BI Tools (Tableau, My Reports, etc.)
  • Experience in custom report building in Workday, Adaptive Planning, or Office Connect
  • Ability to hear a problem and identify ways to add data as a part of the solution
  • Ability to communicate verbally, written, and in data presentations to all audiences regardless of their familiarity with our operation
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices pertaining to the assigned department
  • Knowledge of administrative, financial, and business management principles and practices
  • Knowledge of analysis techniques and reporting strategies
  • Knowledge of computing and data analysis
  • Skill in quantitative data analysis and interpretation.
  • Skill and ability to collect, organize, synthesize and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations
  • Knowledge of data management and information technologies
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles practices and techniques
  • Experience in planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and establishing priorities
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities

  • Ability to lead by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution’s sustainability programs

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
