Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Associate Director for Building Services, the Mandel Hall Manager, is responsible for the overall management of the 878 seat Mandel Hall and works closely with clients to provide technical support for events and programs. The Manager coordinates and oversees all aspects of production and provides on-site supervision for all performance hall events including lectures, conferences, film screenings, and performances. The Manager assists in the scheduling coordination of Mandel Hall in collaboration with the Event Management team. The Manager coordinates all Mandel Hall facility maintenance and custodial care, supervises student technical staff and manages the Hall’s annual operating budget. The job provides professional support and solves straightforward problems in a broad range of operational business activities in the creation of plans for events programming, marketing, and logistics. With guidance from others, monitors the execution of events.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily operations of Mandel Hall including schedule coordination of the calendar of events and consulting and advising clients on all aspects of event management including technical and front of house. Provides oversight of general maintenance, repairs, and custodial care of the Hall. Manages all aspects of event production including lighting set design and lighting plot placement, consults and advises users on prop design and placement, and sets-up and operates audio and sound board equipment during technical rehearsals and performances. Procures and manages inventory of all lighting and audio equipment.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student technical staff to oversee events in Mandel Hall. Develop staffing plans and assignments for student staff that compliment and inform departmental learning outcomes. Develops and oversee student technical staff, as needed, across the Student Centers portfolio of spaces.
  • Manages the annual operating budget and fiscal activity including the accounts receivable (billing of space rental and equipment lease/rental and staff time and services) accounts payable (purchasing and payment of supplies) and expense tracking and reconciliation. With the Associate Director, develops annual operating budget and perform quarterly budget analysis and produces forecast report of revenue and expense performance.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Centers operations team and assist with various office programs and projects. This includes advising on technical theater matters and providing technical support for various theatrical and musical programming outside of Mandel Hall as needed, as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Assists with research, including vendor selection and contract negotiation. Keeps track of all expenses, prepares reports on costs, using existing procedures to solve moderately complex problems as they arise.
  • Works to implement ideas for improvement as they are identified in addition to providing post-event feedback on turnout and vendor performance with direction from others.
  • Executes day-to-day event logistics, and other moderately complex assignments with some guidance from others.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in Theater Management, Technical Direction, or Technical Production desired.
  • Staff supervisory experience desired.
  • Knowledge of building systems and maintenance techniques desired.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of project management software.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to understand the needs of the University of Chicago community, and work with students, faculty, and staff in a wide array of situations.
  • Must be able to work independently and carry out assignments and projects without detailed instructions.
  • Prior experience in budgetary processes (analysis and reporting).

Working Conditions

  • Facilities and operations management of a performance facility requires the ability to conduct regular building rounds and at times, stand for an extended period. Considerable movement within and around building throughout work shift. Pushing and lifting of lighting and sound equipment and packages, setting of tables and chairs. Some light lifting (10-50 lbs).
