Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time, Benefits Eligible

Hybrid Format: 2 days minimum onsite in our Boston office, up to 3 days remote.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, 08:00AM – 04:00PM ET

Airing on nearly 500 stations, Here & Now with hosts Robin Young, Deepa Fernandes and Scott Tong brings the news that breaks after Morning Edition and before All Things Considered. Produced by NPR and WBUR Boston in collaboration with the 30-station Contributors Network, Here & Now is four hours of flexible content each weekday; a modern platform for national news on-air and online. Regular segments include reporting on medicine and science, the environment and stories from our editorial partners, and the international staff of the Washington Post.

As Here & Now's managing producer, you will oversee a team of journalists responsible for broadcast and digital production on behalf of the national daily news magazine program aired on nearly 500 public media stations around the U.S. This is a rare position within public media, encompassing live listening and next-generation audio platforms.

You will have 5-6 direct reports.

Your Responsibilities:

  • (40%) Manage digital strategy for Here & Now: podcast, show website, social media. Work with podcast host, producer, editor and audio engineer to ensure best story selection and timely delivery of podcast.
  • (20%) Participate in daily editorial meetings. Coordinate digital coverage daily and coordinate daily news coverage. Fill in for senior managing editor as necessary.
  • (20%) Assist in identifying and planning stories for long-term coverage. Assist with story edits.
  • (20%) Provide regular written and verbal feedback to staff, including annual performance reports of direct reports. Work with Executive Producer and newsroom leadership on strategic planning.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent/relevant experience
  • 3-5 years of managerial experience.
  • Seven or more years’ experience as a news reporter, news producer or news editor.
  • Experience working with a daily deadline, knowledge of current events including domestic and international news.

Capabilities and Proficiencies:

  • An excitement about WBUR’s mission to provide an essential public good: high-quality local journalism and enriching experiences that foster understanding, connection and community.
  • A commitment to journalism fundamentals, including accuracy, fairness, respect, honesty and independence on air and online (for more, see WBUR’s ethics guidelines ).
  • Demonstrated writing ability and skill in editing both news and features.
  • Familiarity with digital audio editing such as Adobe.
