Job Summary

The Managing Director, Custom Programs for Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education is responsible for overseeing Custom and Affinity programs to deliver on Executive Education’s mission. Reports to the Senior Managing Director, Executive Education. This portfolio head is a strong contributor to the senior leadership team which ensures that Executive Education achieves its academic and financial objectives, creates strong bonds with industry leaders, and sustains HBS as a product leader within the global executive development arena.


Position Description

  • With oversight for custom portfolio of programs, leads the team that includes business development, operations, and portfolio directors who manage programs through their entire life cycle. Ensures the success of individual team members, programs, and the custom portfolio overall.
  • Thoughtfully recruits, develops, and retains a high-performing and collaborative team.
  • Trusted thought partner and member of senior leadership team. Works to shape and implement a growth strategy for the diverse program portfolio that is well-aligned with school priorities and maximizes: faculty development, educational impact for sponsoring organizations/participants, and financial contribution. Weighs opportunity costs and resource implications associated with decisions. Identifies and shares best practices.
  • Has P&L responsibility for the portfolio; routinely contributes to dashboards, goal setting and budget material. Prepares clear executive summaries and decks.
  • Partners with key constituencies and stakeholders including fellow portfolio heads, Executive Education (ExEd) departments, and partners around the school. Develops relationships to manage enrollment and understand the needs of our clients (global executives and organizations).
  • Reviews program metrics and performance (individual and holistically across the portfolio) with an eye towards keeping the portfolio healthy and balanced.
  • Assesses and anticipates evolving custom program design needs, including where digital content and virtual solutions (synchronous and asynchronous) multi-media, and other technological solutions fit into offerings to enhance the program and participant experience. Monitors competitive offerings, and shapes portfolio based on client and market insights.
  • Develops comprehensive knowledge of School's existing intellectual capital and teaching and learning models; ensures ongoing systematic understanding of new content and methodologies.
  • Leads business development efforts through the implementation of a model that identifies and qualifies opportunities that ultimately lead to new client acquisition. Collaborates with internal sales teams to support and grow client engagements.
  • Partner with and support HBS faculty and senior executives at client organizations to design and deliver educational experiences that are of the highest caliber and consistent with the mission, values, and reputation of the Harvard Business School.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • 15+ years of proven successful leadership experience is required
  • Proven, motivated leader with collaborative leadership style, high standards and great judgment; demonstrated success in motivating and managing a high-performing and service-oriented team.
  • Forward-looking and strategic thinker with high EQ. Brings energy and creative mindset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and negotiation skills. Ability to enjoy and thrive in a highly collaborative and often ambiguous, complex environment.
  • Strong analytical and listening skills; ability to extract and clearly/concisely communicate key points, both verbally and in written communication.
  • Works well with senior and C-suite executives, faculty, and has a deep commitment to establishing strong relationships with all constituents of programs and the broader organization.
  • Proven ability to shape and execute a strategy with P&L responsibility.
  • Deep familiarity with the field of executive education, executive development and/or corporate learning and development required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • MBA or related educational experience preferred.
  • Experience in strategic planning, evaluation of custom programs, outcomes assessment, and issues surrounding the development of custom programs.
  • Developing and leading senior-level professionals
  • A deep knowledge and understanding of executive development, management learning, and program design, delivery, and evaluation.

Working Conditions

  • Travel, both domestic and international, is required.

Additional Information

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA-based campus 2-3 days per week. Specific days and schedules will be determined between you and your manager.
