POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general guidance of the Assistant Director, Resource Centers, the Manager, Veterans Resource Center is responsible for managing the Veterans Resource Center, including navigating complex student veteran issues and developing strategies to address barriers to academic success.  Responsibilities include assessing student veteran’s needs and developing and implementing programs promoting student success; evaluating the effectiveness of programs and services; developing and recommending VRC policies and procedures; managing the VRC’s annual operating budget; and collaborating with veteran-connected on-and-off campus entities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Veterans Resource Center (VRC);
  • Oversee the daily operation of the Veterans Resource Center including customer service, programs, services, marketing, volunteer and intern programs, facility maintenance, and technological support;
  • Train, and supervise the work of one, full-time (1) Veterans Resource Center Supervisor and the work of part-time student assistant employees, including monitoring performance; generating performance evaluations and administering disciplinary action as needed; training, and supervising the work of academic Master of Social Work intern(s) as applicable;
  • Develop, implement and monitor the DREAM Center department annual operating budget; oversee grant expenditures; monitor AMEX account and generate financial reports;
  • Responsible for providing or to assist in providing academic and personal guidance to military connected students and making referrals to appropriate university support services and community resources;
  • Assess student veteran needs and develop, implement and evaluate programs and services to address student veteran needs;
  • Provide support and advocacy to students experiencing crisis and connect them with appropriate on and off campus resources, including overseeing veteran student scholarship(s) and emergency funds;
  • Develop curriculum and facilitate educational trainings and/or train student assistants to facilitate trainings for administrators, faculty, staff and students on topics related to military culture and supporting student veterans;
  • Consult, collaborate, and engage with campus departments, student organizations and community-based entities to develop solutions to student veteran issues/problems ranging in complexity from moderate to complex;
  • Represent the Veterans Resource Center at campus and community outreach activities as assigned;
  • Review policies, practices and organizational structures that impact student veterans and recommend changes as appropriate;
  • Outreach and collaborate with on and off-campus Veteran entities, and other college campuses regarding Veteran concerns and programming;
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships and partnerships amongst campus identity- based centers (including but not limited to Black House, Glenn Omatsu House, Women’s Research and Resource Center, Chicano House, and La Casita) and USU resource centers (Pride Center, DREAM Center and Veterans Resource Center) to support intersectional collaborative programming;
  • Serve on campus and community-based committees as directed, advocating for student veteran needs, including but not limited to co-chairing the Student Veteran Success Advisory Committee;
  • Participate in University Student Union staff meetings, activities, training and development programs and professional development activities;
  • Stay abreast with current federal, state, and institutional policies as well as student services literature pertaining to student veterans and education;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology or a related field.  Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:

Equivalent to three years of professional experience in a job-related field preferably in higher education with an emphasis in veteran affairs, student unions, student activities, or student development.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Master’s Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Higher Education Administration, Social Work or other job-related field.

-Experience in budget development, monitoring and analysis.

Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Knowledge of veteran student needs and veteran resources
  • Knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a Veterans Resource Center
  • Knowledge of and experience in program planning, implementation, and assessment
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management
  • General knowledge of the mentoring process
  • General knowledge of group process training and development practices
  • General knowledge of student development theory and desired outcomes
  • General knowledge of managing critical situations including but not limited to mandated reporting
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or other email systems
  • Effectively organize and administer programs and services
  • Successfully communicate with students, faculty, staff and subordinates including the ability to clearly express ideas and directions verbally and in writing including attention to composition, punctuation, grammar, and spelling
  • Effectively lead individuals and groups
  • Work independently on multiple tasks without close supervision
  • Work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student population and staff

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is generally performed in a temperature-controlled on-site office environment or at an approved and appropriate workspace in the incumbent’s home. Must be able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.  Must be flexible with ability to adapt readily to change. Regular contact with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the general public required. Some evening and weekend work required. Must be able to lift 25 pounds of programming/training materials unassisted.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

This position supervises the Veterans Resource Center Supervisor and part-time student assistant employees and potentially the Master of Social Work intern(s).

PAY, BENEFITS AND WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is employed through University Student Union (USU). The USU offers an excellent benefits package including Medical, Dental & Vision insurance, Life Insurance, Vacation, Sick Leave, 14 paid Holidays, company sponsored retirement program and more.

The anticipated hiring range will be as follows and is dependent on experience and qualifications:

Annually:             $ 65,000.00 - $ 77,000.00

The salary range of the position is as follows:

Annually:             Minimum:  $ 63,315.00                 Maximum:  $ 90,203.40

HOURS: Full-Time; FLSA Exempt; may include early mornings, late evenings and weekends.
