In recent years, enrollment in Economics has increased steadily. Currently, each year, the Department has approximately 275 juniors and seniors taking on independent research projects. Next year, there are 149 rising juniors and 123 rising seniors who will need assistance with such projects. The opening of new residential colleges is expected to continue to contribute to continued growth.
Undergraduate education in economics has changed dramatically in recent decades with increased emphasis on learning by doing and testing theories using new statistical methods. Princeton undergrads are increasingly taking on very ambitious topics for independent research without having formal preparation in statistical software, especially in STATA and R programming language.
While faculty advisors and graduate preceptors can teach students the methodology and conceptual frameworks in the classroom, there is a demonstrated need for direct instruction and consultation support in how to use STATA and R programming language in practice.
Under the management of the Economics Department, the Manager, Statistical Services provides high-quality responsive assistance to undergraduates who are conducting statistical analysis using STATA and R. The Manager, Statistical Services will hold one-on-one tutorials in Python, STATA and R. This requires more than “familiarity” with these languages/packages; the person must have command at a level where they can help our students fix problems in their code. The prospective hire must also be familiar with the research methods of empirical economics to the extent that they know how to implement the most common empirical strategies used in our discipline.
- Providing instruction and training workshops (in-person and virtual) and development of self-paced online training materials on STATA and R that focus on Economics or Finance research.
- One-on-one research consultations and general outreach to undergraduates concentrating in Economics, especially the approximately 275 juniors and seniors conducting independent research each year.
- Outreach and support to Economics faculty in relation to their research.
- Coordination with other campus entities that support statistical software
- Professional development; Hiring, training, and supervising team of graduate student assistants
- Master's or PhD in Statistics, Economics, Political Science, or a related field
- Experience in teaching statistics and statistical computation, and advising empirical research at the undergraduate level in both a classroom and an online setting
- Expertise in STATA and R programming language
- Knowledge of datasets commonly used in Economics and Finance and their pitfalls (eg, Census, Wharton Research Data Services, Datastream International etc)
- Knowledge of Econometric methods (eg, Panel data estimation using Fixed Effects and Random Effects, Logit and Ordered Logit, Event Studies, Time Series etc)
