The USC Keck School of Medicine - Alzheimer Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI), located in San Diego, California is an academic institute comprised of an expert panel of scientific collaborators committed to advancing the development of new treatments for Alzheimers Disease (AD) through innovative clinical trials.

ATRI is looking for a Software Engineering Manager, that will overseeing a team of twenty engineers developing innovative biomedical research and clinical trials software and systems, which holds a pivotal role encompassing various responsibilities. Leading the team with clear goals and inspiration, they manage project lifecycles, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and efficient resource allocation. Their technical expertise enables them to guide the team through complex challenges while staying updated on biomedical research and software development trends. Facilitating cross-functional collaboration, they translate stakeholder requirements into actionable plans and maintain compliance with regulatory standards like HIPAA and FDA guidelines. Moreover, they foster team cohesion, drive quality assurance efforts, manage risks, and liaise with stakeholders to ensure project success and maintain stakeholder satisfaction. In essence, the manager's leadership ensures the team delivers high-quality, reliable software solutions crucial to biomedical research advancements.

Required skills:

  • 8+ years full-stack web development experience including front-end, back-end (preferred 10+ years)
  • Comprehensive knowledge with:
    • Django and the Django security models
    • Writing and shipping code with a modern web application framework
    • AngularJS, Cassandra, React, NoSQL
    • RDBMS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.)
    • Version control fundamentals (GIT, HG, SVN, etc.)
    • Agile Project Management Tools (Atlassian JIRA - Confluence)
    • Test-driven development (TDD) and Continuous Integration
    • Fundamental web service technologies including XML, SOA, and REST
    • Software integration experience and Amazon Web Services
  • Proven experience in leadership/management roles

Location: San Diego, CA

The annual base salary range for this position is $186,335.20 - $214,982.87. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.


Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree Minimum Experience: 8 years with programming and documentation procedures, methods and operator instructions. Minimum Skills: Proven experience in leadership/management roles. Comprehensive knowledge of Amazon Web Services and related technologies/methodologies (e.g., agile/scrum, DevOps, incremental delivery). Experience performing and leading unit tests, systems integration, and user acceptance. Demonstrated experience with one or more relevant programming languages, able to gain needed contexts for domains. Experience developing and deploying prototypes to scalable pipelines and applying software development lifecycle principles. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply scalability, reliability, and software engineering best practices (e.g., version control, testing, developer and end-user documentation). Substantial knowledge of security concepts, familiarity with secure code development techniques, and understanding of automated solutions. Ability to work independently on complex programming. Excellent organization, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience weighing economic costs and values objectively, supporting coworkers on a project basis, and contributing to discussions in a civil manner. Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to provide both detailed information as well as summaries to varied audiences. Ability to build strong, positive working relationships and rapport with diverse groups of team members. Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree Computer Science Or Bachelor's degree Computer Engineering Or Bachelor's degree Electrical Engineering Or Bachelor's degree in related field(s) Preferred Experience: 10 years in IT/programming. Preferred Skills: Proficiency with Python, Javascript, C/C++, Java, Ruby and/or other advanced programming languages. Experience with Unix/Linux programming and/or administration. Experience in higher education.
