POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the direction of the Chief of Police or their designee, the Manager, Security & Safety will manage the Safety Security Aides (SSA) at the UMass Chan Medical School and areas affiliated with UMass Chan.  May perform duties of SSA within scope of assignment.  Manages personnel, including scheduling, assigning work, training, and discipline. Also manages equipment assigned to the SSA. The manager will develop and implement security strategies and policies to protect the campus of UMass Chan Medical School. The manager will lead a team of security personnel, including hiring, training and performance management. The manager will foster a culture of customer service-based security awareness.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Functions as a manager of SSA assigned to one or more posts at client site(s); acts to ensure that all post orders are followed, that established rounds are completed, and that adequate reports are filed; notifies proper authorities and client in emergency situations.
  • Coaches, trains and disciplines personnel as appropriate, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively; seeks advice from the Chief of Police or designee as appropriate; meets personally with employees and documents coaching and disciplinary actions.
  • Coordinates training of SSA personnel; reviews post orders and other details of assignments with subordinates.
  • Assists in the submission of payroll and personnel information to the company as designated.
  • Ensures adequate coverage of all posts and positions.
  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities and areas for improvement.
  • Investigate security breaches, incidents and violations, document findings and implement corrective actions.
  • Educate employees on security awareness, policies and procedures through training programs and communication initiatives.
  • Stay informed about the latest technologies, trends and regulatory requirements and make recommendations for enhancements to the security program.
  • Inspects posts as scheduled and meets with subordinates to outline tasks and responsibilities.
  • Meets with Chief of Police or designee as scheduled or as needed to provide assurance that all security requirements are being met and to provide status updates.
  • Carries out supervisory duties that can include some or all of the following: interviewing, orienting and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; coaching and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • May perform the duties of SSA in accord with post orders and UMPD policy.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, such as human resources and IT to ensure compliance with policies and standards.
  • Coordinating security equipment maintenance and facilitating repairs in a timely manner.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • S. diploma or G.E.D., and 5+ years of security-related training or experience, including lead or supervisory experience.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must meet applicable state, county & municipal licensing requirements for Security Officers at all times.
  • Must meet & continue to meet requirements for specific skills, certifications or authorizations specified for assigned site.
  • Knowledge of security operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise staff, including assigning work and providing training and discipline.
  • Ability to provide positive direction and motivate performance.
  • Understanding of a variety of security and safety devices and controls.
  • Ability to learn quickly and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Must have a reliable means of communication (i.e., pager or phone) and transportation (public or private).
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
  • Must have the ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with clients, at various social levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Ability to track and maintain schedule assignments.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances.
  • Courteous telephone manners.
  • Ability to adapt to various sites and changes in post procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the external environment and organization.
  • Ability to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports.
  • Good organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant professional certifications in security management or related areas preferred.
  • Knowledge of emergency response planning and incident management.
  • Ability to adapt to changing security threats and technologies.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and best practices.
  • Training or experience in emergency response and crisis management
  • Experience with weapons detection and visitor management systems
  • Anility to adapt to changing security threats and technologies.
