Position Summary
Completes various assignments and projects in the use, operation setup and maintenance of shop machinery, instruments and hand tools in performing projects of various complexities.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates the milling machine, lathe, drill press, sander, buffer, bench grinder, and various hand tools.
  • Communicates with project requester regarding blueprints, sketches, writings, and verbal instructions.
  • Order, receives, and stores material and supplies.
  • Performs soldering, brazing, welding, and spot welding of various components.
  • Overhauls, repairs, modifies and installs parts such as stages, lenses, stepping motors, microscopes and attachments.
  • Repairs and modifies photo optical equipment, electromechanical equipment.
  • Designs and fabricates a variety of experimental lab equipment for the particular use by Washington University labs.
  • Performs sheet metal work.
  • Documentation: Completion of work orders; identify time and material spent on the project; provide time and material cost estimate for jobs.
  • Performs tasks outside of job description in support of the Department and the School’s mission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift and carry tools and material waiting in excess of 50 pounds, and be able to raise and carry with assistance items weighing 200 pounds.
  • Machine shop environment where various equipment is stored and used.
  • Works inside and outside, in dusty and dirty places where temperatures may exceed 100° and equipment may be oily and greasy.
  • Exposure to wet and cold conditions, as well as noise and vibration from operation equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to operate various types of machinery used in the trade.
  • Ability to design and fabricate scientific equipment for laboratory experimental use, using various metals, plastics, and other materials required for finished items.
  • Is proficient in the use of NC equipment, and programming.
  • Proficient in the use of, and programing with Cad-Cam software.
  • Experienced/proficient with MIG and TIG welding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys.
  • A candidate needs to possess an openness to learn new skills.
  • Strong Customer service skills.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and an Associate degree from a technical college as a machinist.
  • Minimum four year or more of work experience with shop math proficiency and demonstrates a proficient ability to understand and apply mechanical concepts and principles to solve problems.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Position requires a valid Missouri Class E driver’s license or Illinois Class D license.

Salary Range
$23.53 - $36.49 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
