Job Summary
This position is the Manager of the Office of Laboratory Safety (approximately 0.60 FTE) and a part-time Laboratory Instructor in Chemistry (approximately 0.40 FTE). In addition to all the normal roles of Laboratory Instructor, this position includes:
  • Serving as the college Chemical Hygiene Officer and overseeing the Office of Laboratory Safety which supports all research and instructional labs.
  • The Chemical Hygiene Officer serves as a resource for all required safety trainings.
  • Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, Biomedical Waste Management, and Chemical Inventory Management.
  • Compliance with EPA, MeDEP, OSHA, and DOT regulations while playing a critical role in implementing the OSHA Laboratory Standard.
  • Working closely with the Bowdoin office of Environmental Health and Safety.

Education/Skills Requirements
Required:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field.
  • The following professional licensures, certifications and specialized trainings are required (or the ability to receive them shortly after the start of employment):

-US DOT Hazardous Materials Training (per 49CFR Parts 171-180)
-US DOT Hazardous Materials Training (per 49CFR Parts 171-180)
-US EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste and Universal Waste Training (per 40CFR Part 261)
-US DOT Biomedical Waste awareness level training for generators
-Laboratory Safety Course (29CFR 1910.1450); Laboratory Safety Institute, Natick, Ma (or equivalent)
Preferred:
  • A masters degree in Chemistry or related fields. The following professional licensures, certifications and specialized trainings are required (or the ability to receive them shortly after the start of employment):

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Required:
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a management role focused on laboratory safety in an academic, research, or industrial setting.
  • Thorough understanding of basic chemistry concepts.
  • Strong comprehension of regulatory requirements with a focus on the OSHA Laboratory Standard and RCRA Hazardous Waste Rules.
  • Prior experience teaching, preferably in a laboratory situation or field sciences. Competent with computer technology in the labs such as multimedia presentation, graphing, statistical programs, and data acquisition and analysis. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Possess strong supervisory skills, problem solving skills and outstanding organizational skills. Able to manage the many aspects of overseeing a teaching laboratory and provide individual and group instruction with sensitivity to different learning styles. Able to multitask and is comfortable interacting with a wide scope of students, faculty and staff on a daily basis. Able to serve as a role model for safety and compliance.
  • The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check.

Preferred:
  • Prior experience in an higher education setting.

Standard Work Days and Hours
  • This is a full-time, year round position working 40 hours/week (1.00 FTE).
  • This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
  • Standard days and hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
