Summary of Job Duties:
The Manager of Safety and Research Compliance reports to the Associate Dean for Research, and serves as the College of Engineering's primary resource for research safety and compliance. This position provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for programs that support the College's research, teaching, and outreach missions while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university regulations.
Working collaboratively with faculty, researchers, department/college leadership, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), the Office of Research, Sponsored Programs, Campus Public Safety, and other institutional partners, the Manager develops and administers programs that promote a culture of safety, security, and regulatory excellence across research laboratories, machine shops, makerspaces, testing facilities, and academic environments. The position plays a critical role in enabling federally funded research, and mitigating institutional risk while advancing the College's strategic research mission.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
This position requires:
• Regular travel among engineering buildings, research laboratories, testing facilities, and machine shops.
• Occasional exposure to laboratory hazards while conducting inspections, with appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Occasional evening or weekend work to support research operations, emergencies, or regulatory inspections.
• May be designated as a member of the College or University's emergency response and incident management team.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Management, Research Administration, or a related discipline from an accredited institution of higher education
At least three years of progressively responsible experience supporting research safety, laboratory operations, export controls, research compliance, OR research security in a research-intensive environment
Experience supporting federally-sponsored research programs
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Public Administration, Research Administration, or a related discipline from an accredited institution of higher education
At least five years of progressively responsible experience supporting research safety, laboratory operations, export controls, research compliance, OR research security in a research-intensive environment
Experience in an R1 research university or national laboratory
Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Export Compliance Professional (CECP), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP), Project Management Professional (PMP), or related credentials
Demonstrated knowledge of federal research regulations, such as OSHA, EPA, EAR, CMMC, ITAR, and OFAC
Experience supporting engineering research laboratories and advanced research facilities. Knowledge of Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, NIH, and other federal sponsor requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of engineering research environments and laboratory operations
Knowledge of federal research compliance, export controls, and research security regulations
Ability to interpret and apply complex regulatory requirements in a collaborative, research-focused environment
Strong consultation, facilitation, and relationship management skills
