Bard NYC is accepting applications for a Manager of Residential Life to provide overall leadership and vision for the creation, administration, and evaluation of a comprehensive residential living/education program. The Manager of Residential Life plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the Bard NYC study away program in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, overseeing the student residence, leading social and community-building programming, and engaging with students on issues of health and wellness. They are the primary point of contact for resident Bard NYC students' non-academic concerns and the position includes on-call duties. The Manager of Residential Life works to foster a supportive educational environment that promotes students' individual growth, community engagement, and academic achievement.

The Manager of Residential Life reports to the Executive Director of Bard NYC and works closely with the Director of Educational Programs as well as with other Bard College colleagues in New York City and at Bard's main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

Position Overview:

Bard NYC is comprised of a small team of dedicated professionals in New York City, who work closely with colleagues at Bard College's main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY to deliver quality programming and support the success of students living and studying at Bard NYC. The on-site team works together to ensure student success, with the Manager of Residential Life chiefly responsible for building a student community and helping to support the development of positive and healthy relationships among students. The Manager of Residential Life serves as an advocate and mentor to dorm residents and is the primary staff member working with student residents on non-academic issues, including health and wellness and roommate disputes. The position incorporates various aspects of student affairs into one role dedicated to support the small and transient student community made up of undergraduate and graduate students from a broad range of US and international institutions.

This position requires a person with energy and creativity, dedicated to working intensively with college students. They help create and maintain a supportive educational environment, which promotes students' individual growth, community responsibility, and academic achievement as they adapt and integrate into life in New York City. The Manager of Residential Life supervises student ResLife staff and works closely with all student residents to promote a safe and healthy living environment. Social and community building programming in the residence and local community is an essential responsibility for the Manager of Residential Life. They also work closely with residents to build student-organized activities.

In addition, the Manager of Residential Life collaborates with Bard NYC colleagues on New York City-focused student programming held outside of the local Williamsburg community, and they assist in the organizing and running of events and activities in the facility connected to the Bard NYC academic program and the broader Bard College community. Due to the nature of the position, flexibility with non-traditional hours is imperative. The position includes administrative and office work for Bard NYC. The Manager of Residential Life position is an exciting opportunity to help shape and enhance a dynamic experience for students.

Key responsibilities include:

• Oversight of 200 student residents
• Manage housing assignments, mediation between roommates, and room changes
• Organizing and running social and community-building programming in the dormitory and local community with the support of Peer Counselors
• Holding office hours for student residents and working closely with them on various non-academic concerns
• Identifying and promoting events taking place in Williamsburg and New York City to student residents
• Selection, training, and supervision of student Peer Counselors
• Ensuring the health and safety of residents and working on issues of student wellness
• Participating in the primary on call rotation and assisting with after-hours emergency/crisis situations
• Work with the Executive Director on management of the Brooklyn facility
• Making rounds of the facility and reporting any issues or concerns to the Executive Director or other member of the management team
• Event planning and management
• Oversee student move in/move out
• Leading dormitory orientation
• Creating print and web-based materials related to living in the dormitory and broader Williamsburg community
• Building policy, procedure, and systems and implementing these systems to ensure a seamless student experience and running of the facility
• Providing students guidance and support, in particular with helping students adjust to living in New York City and, in some cases, the United States
• Basic financial and office management
• Providing case management for students in psychological or medical distress. Counseling and referring students to appropriate professional staff members and resources as needed
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

• Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred, in student personnel or related field
• At least five years of work experience; 3-5 years progressive professional experience in residence life, student affairs, or management of study away programming is desirable
• Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills, written and verbal communication skills
• Efficient time management skills with experience managing multiple priorities, multitasking, and meeting deadlines
• Experience in event planning and management
• Outstanding organizational and administrative capabilities
• Ability to work independently and with limited supervision as well as work effectively within a team environment and with student leadership
• Ability to both manage details and see the big picture of programs and projects
• Strong working knowledge of New York City
• Must be able to work within a department that values initiative, strong work ethic, and teamwork
• A commitment to student advocacy and an interest in daily interaction with a variety of creative and independent students is a must
• Full-time residency in the Bard NYC dormitory is required

Compensation: $60,000-$65,000; full-time, 12-month, live-in exempt position

Compensation includes salary, accommodation in the Williamsburg residence, work cell phone, professional development opportunities, benefits package including health benefits, paid vacation after the first year, and retirement plan after two years

About Bard NYC:

Bard NYC is a newly expanded experiential learning undergraduate study-away program in New York City, which pairs academic study with professional internships. A semester combines 12-16 credits in a wide array of courses, including a core-seminar, with an internship of up to 20 hours per week.

The experience is accompanied by co-curricular programming to help students explore career pathways and build professional networks, as well as cultural programming to introduce students to New York City. The program builds off of the success of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs program, which has welcomed students from around the world for more than twenty years. A newly opened dormitory and study space in Brooklyn, and expanded academic and internship offerings allow a larger number of students from a wide array of majors and career interests the opportunity to participate.

Bard NYC is an enterprising intersection of academics and applied practices, engaging the interests of Bard's students and their peers from other U.S. and global institutions. Study away participants spend a semester or year at Bard NYC during their sophomore, junior, or senior years. Bard NYC also hosts students from Bard's MA in Global Studies as well as graduate students on exchange for a semester in New York.
