Position Summary
A qualified individual is needed to fill the role of Manager of Operations of the Social System Design Lab at the Brown School. The Social System Design Lab works to advance the science and practice of system dynamics with communities in pursuit of social justice and health equity, working primarily through community and university-based teaching; supporting peer learning and methodological innovation through convening and practice materials development; and collaboration on applied community-based system dynamics projects. The Manager of Operations will work in close partnership with the SSDL Director to implement the new strategic vision of the SSDL.
The Manager of Operations will focus on building the SSDL’s team of staff, students, consultants, and affiliates, and will play a key role in proposal development including cultivation of new partnerships. In addition, the Manager of Operations will lead implementation of the SSDL’s Community of Practice initiatives, including managing workflows for materials development and coordinating practice network activities. The individual hired for this role will oversee ongoing research project collaborations, including supervising staff and student team members and overseeing administrative requirements.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • In collaboration with the SSDL Director, the Manager of Operations will lead implementation the new Social System Design Lab strategic vision.
  • Lead operational planning for team development and administrative procedures to support strategic vision.
  • Develop research and project funding proposals relevant to SSDL strategy, including drafting of scopes of work, concept notes, and budgets.
  • Develop partnerships that are aligned with the vision and goals of the SSDL.
  • Serve as liaison and connector with SSDL affiliates and program partners.

Community of Practice Program Management

  • Lead implementation of SSDL’s knowledge management and community of practice initiatives including:
  • Manage the production workflow for development, design, review and dissemination of SSDL practice resources.
  • Oversee student, staff, partner, and consultant contributions to practice resource development.
  • Convene, co-facilitate, and coordinate community-facing learning & practice network activities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to expand, resource, and strengthen community of practice program.

Project Team Supervision

  • Serve as project manager & day-to-day point of contact for multiple research projects, including:
  • Oversee delineation of tasks and development of project timelines for multiple projects.
  • Supervision of student and staff team members on multiple ongoing projects.
  • Manage budgetary expenditures in cooperation with financial manager.
  • Oversee project reporting, IRB compliance, and deliverable compilation and submission.

Administration/Operations

  • Oversee maintenance of ongoing activities of the SSDL including:
  • Maintaining lab space and supplies, including group model building materials and IT equipment. 
  • Manage inquiries from university departments or community members.
  • Oversee SSDL website and communications presence.
  • Oversee implementation of in-person and virtual workshops and other events.

Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting facilitation & modeling activities of SSDL projects, advising system dynamics students, delivering guest presentations, and contributing to SSDL culture and community building. 

Working Conditions

Primary work conducted in St. Louis at the Brown School offices with travel locally, nationally, or internationally for implementation of project activities and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Four years related experience in community development, community-based research, organizing, policy practice, philanthropy, design, or a relevant field.
  • Experience with strategy development and/or implementation.
  • Experience supervising teams working on complex projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with program development & budgeting.
  • Experience working with students and learners in teaching or training environments.
  • Experience with system dynamics modeling or systems thinking methods.
  • Written fluency in a second language (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin).
  • Experience in a research environment, exercising a high degree of autonomy and using skills in planning, initiative and problem solving. 
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple roles and ability to balance competing demands with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of autonomy, using strategic skills in staff planning, initiative and problem solving. 
  • Strong time management, attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities and ability to forecast and plan work across teams, while maintaining a landscape view of priorities, values and vision.
  • Excellent analytic and problem solving skills and ability to think strategically and programmatically.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated learning orientation, including the ability to rapidly integrate new skills, concepts, and sources of knowledge.
  • Familiarity with the basic principles of systems thinking/ system dynamics.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail in editing, communications, and project coordination.
  • Commitment to core values of the Social System Design Lab.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years of professional work experience or equivalent education and experience.

Salary Range
$55,600.00 - $94,900.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
