BSD PSM - Undergraduate Medical Education

About the Department

The mission statement of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine reads: ‘At the University of Chicago, in an atmosphere of interdisciplinary scholarship and discovery, the Pritzker School of Medicine is dedicated to inspiring diverse students of exceptional promise to become leaders and innovators in science and medicine for the betterment of humanity.’ In size, geographic location, and organizational structure, in the diversity of the student body and the strong bonds of our community, the Pritzker School of Medicine offers a unique environment for medical education. The Pritzker School of Medicine is one of few medical schools to be located physically on its University campus, offering both intellectual and social advantages to students who spend their medical school years within a vibrant, multidisciplinary intellectual community. Most importantly the opportunity for collaborative research and study is outstanding: all divisions of the University and its professional schools are located within steps of the hospital, as are the extensive biological and physical sciences research laboratories, thus providing a rich array of opportunities for our medical students. All medical education across the continuum – undergraduate medical education (medical school), graduate medical education (internship, residency, and fellowship), continuing medical education (faculty), and simulations – is overseen by the Dean for Medical Education. The undergraduate medical school curriculum emphasizes active learning and the integration among disciplines, particularly the connection between the basic and clinical sciences. The curriculum also requires a four-year engagement with scholarship and discovery and the production of a scholarly project, which gives medical students the opportunity to study an area of interest in depth. To further promote an atmosphere of shared learning and collaboration, the Pritzker curriculum utilizes a Pass/Fail grading system which encourages cooperation among students, develops lifelong learners, and allows students to prioritize their learning and extracurricular experiences. The University of Chicago has a long rich history of innovation in education beginning with educational pioneer and philosopher John Dewey. Quality medical education is essential for preparing future physicians to provide exemplary patient care and to become outstanding educators who will engage in innovative research that will change paradigms and challenge the status quo. A thoughtful, rigorous, evidence-based medical education leads to scholarly discovery that will improve the quality of future physicians’ education and ultimately improve patient care. Therefore, the University of Chicago provides resources for all faculty to support the acquisition of teaching skills and to encourage scholarship in educational methodology through a broad array of faculty development initiatives. The Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators supports and promotes research, innovation, and scholarship in medical education at the University of Chicago. The core missions of the Academy are: (1) Promote excellence in teaching across the continuum; (2) Support scholarship among medical educators; (3) Enhance the Pritzker curriculum by supporting, recognizing and rewarding its outstanding teachers; (4) Build community among medical educators in the Pritzker School of Medicine; and (5) Facilitate the creation of an environment that enhances the status of medical educators at the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago also sponsored a one-year faculty development program - MERITS (Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship) Fellowship & Training Programs in Medical Education – which helps faculty develop innovative teaching methods and undertake successful educational program implementation and evaluation. In addition, due to the growing interest of educators and researchers in promoting and sharing innovations in medical education, the Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) monthly conferences brings together a diverse group of educators and researchers across the University of Chicago's clinical, basic science, and social science departments to share and discuss interesting ongoing innovations and approaches to medical education. Workshops feature both institutional and external educators and researchers whose work is focused on improvements and methods in medical education, including such topics as curriculum development or implementation, competency assessment and evaluation, simulation or observation studies, and policy or ethical dilemmas in medical training.
