Job Summary
Leads and manages the University’s laboratory and research safety programs including consulting with faculty, staff, and administration on the safe handling and management of biological and chemical agents in a growing research and teaching environment. Provides input to research safety committees on compliance issues; institutes monitoring, corrective, and preventative action programs to evaluate conformance with federal, state, local and/or University requirements, policies, and procedures. Manages and coordinates the day-to day laboratory safety functions, and supervises safety and health specialists and technicians.

Essential Functions
  • Leads and manages the University’s Laboratory and Research Safety programs including consulting with faculty, staff, and administration on the safe handling of biological agents and proper management of chemicals in a growing research and teaching environment.
  • Oversees and manages University-wide chemical safety and chemical inventory programs.
  • Provides technical input to research safety committees on safety, health, and regulatory compliance issues; institutes monitoring, corrective, and preventive action programs to evaluate conformance with federal, state, local and/or University requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Manages and coordinates the day-to day laboratory safety operations while providing supervision to laboratory and research safety specialists and technicians.
  • Oversees comprehensive biological safety program that meets National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Division of Select Agents and Toxins (DSAT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Auburn University Requirements. Provides technical assistance to the University Select Agents and Toxins program and works in collaboration with the Office of Research Compliance in support of biosafety and biosecurity programs.
  • Develops and implements Laboratory and Research safety Program strategic goals and objectives through planning, understanding needs and priorities, setting goals and objectives, and monitoring progress of strategic initiatives.
  • Oversees development and implementation of safety and health training programs.
  • Provides laboratory and research safety consultation, education and outreach to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with department heads, unit safety liaisons, principal investigators, and unit supervisors to facilitate effective laboratory and research safety programs.

Full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major responsibility and includes training, evaluating, and making or recommending pay, promotion or other employment decisions.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Science, Health and Safety, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
4 years of experience in safety programs management, in a supervisory role, and in health and safety regulatory compliance programs.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, and experience in implementation of Laboratory Safety, Chemical Safety and Biological Safety Programs is required. Must have strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people.
Minimum Technology Skills
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access etc.,).

Desired Qualifications
  • Masters Degree is desired.
  • Professional experience in a research-intensive academic setting is desirable.
  • Certified Safety Professional- Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)- The Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing proactive laboratory and research safety and health programs in academic and/or research institutions, with progressively responsible positions, strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, supervision experience, proven management, and leadership skills. Experience working in higher education is strongly desired.
