Job Description

Morrison Institute for Public Policy, Arizona’s leading resource for rigorous, independent policy research and analysis, is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as its next Manager of Communications and Senior Writer. This position will receive administrative direction from the Institute’s executive director and leadership team, including the research director and Kyl Center director. This position will produce written content about Morrison Institute research, edit research reports on complex policy topics, and manage marketing communication for the Institute and its Centers (Kyl Center for Water Policy and the Arizona Research Center for Housing Equity and Sustainability). The role will require the conceptualization, creation, and implementation of materials that develop and maintain a strong positive image for the Institute within ASU’s branding and identity standards. The Manager of Communications and Senior Writer will substantively contribute to the writing and editing of policy-focused research content, track and report impact metrics, generate social media and email messaging, oversee the Institute’s Website, and perform other essential duties listed below.

Salary Range

$75,000 - $90,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Develop and implement plans for successful reputation management, proactively identifying ways to strengthen the Institute’s brand in Arizona and the region.
  • Build and steward relationships with national, state and local media as well as policy makers and key stakeholders.
  • Track and report key impact metrics per the Morrison Institute strategic plan.
  • Manage the development, design and publication of all printed material and electronic communication.
  • Edit Morrison Institute documents including proposals, board communications, research reports, issue briefs and website content.
  • Produce high-quality written content such as press releases, news alerts, Web content, speeches and an annual impact report.
  • Generate the Institute’s social media content, maintaining a brand built on objective, nonpartisan research and civil discourse.
  • Manage the Institute’s Salesforce Marketing Cloud email program.
  • Occasionally plan and execute virtual and in-person events, including the institute’s annual gathering for donors and public policy leaders. Event tasks include promotion, media engagement and securing speakers and moderators.
  • Coordinate with relevant University offices on all marketing strategies and publicity.
  • Within University policy, solicit bids and maintain working relationships with outside vendors related to these core duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field AND five (5) years of experience in a public relations/marketing role; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of written communication skills with experience and proficiency writing for multiple formats (Web content, social media, speeches, grant proposals, research executive summaries)
  • Experience communicating qualitative and quantitative research findings and data to diverse, non-academic audiences
  • Experience developing marketing plans to promote reports and research-based tools
  • Experience tracking and reporting impact metrics
  • Familiarity with key Arizona policy issues and experience communicating about policy and political content in an unbiased, nonpartisan data-driven manner
  • Experience managing communication/marketing budgets
  • Experience managing staff and contractors
  • Familiarity with Cision PR software
  • Familiarity with Hootsuite social media planning software
  • Experience in using interpersonal skills and a proven ability to be responsive, collaborative and adaptable in an environment with multiple projects, partners, clients and funders

Working Environment

  • Activities are generally performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • May be required to travel between buildings at the Downtown campus, which requires walking moderate distances.
