Manager of Campus Art

The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for the position of Manager of Campus Collections. Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions, and supporting the work and leadership of the Campus Art Steering Committee (co-chaired by the Art Museum Director and the University Architect), the position will manage the care of existing campus art collections, the process of commissioning and otherwise acquiring new works of campus art, conduct an annual inventory and condition review of the works, and oversee their installation and deinstallation in a variety of settings beyond the Museum.

 

With origins in the 18th century, the Art Museum is one of the leading university art museums in the country and serves as a gateway to the University for visitors from around the world. The campus collections, numbering around 800 objects, include sculptures, paintings, and monuments. Highlights include Henry Moore’s Oval with Points (1969-70), Alexander Proctor’s Tigers (1879), and Ursula von Rydingsvard’s URODA (2015), among many others. These extant works are augmented by a robust commissioning program.

Working in close cooperation with the curator of modern and contemporary art, conservators, the director, and others, the Manager of Campus Art will collaborate with the University’s Departments of Grounds and Buildings, Risk Management, and Office of the General Counsel. They will respond to external inquiries, as well as coordinate communication with and among stakeholders, including artists and their representatives, as well as with University administrators; work with and provide support for scholars, students, and curators engaged in research on works in the campus art collections; and shape and monitor budgets for special projects and for the care of the existing campus art collections.

 

The successful candidate will have significant experience project managing complex art installations together with collections management experience. They will have an aptitude for and experience in working effectively with multiple stakeholders and projects involving significant financial resources, in a collaborative environment, resulting in an understanding of how to navigate within a complex organization. Ideally, they will have experience of working with living artists as well as with institutions.

 

An M.A. in art history, museum studies, or a related field with an advanced knowledge of modern and contemporary art is required as is a minimum of 5 years museum or related experience managing complex art projects. Evidence of a growing network of relationships in the community of artists, museums, and galleries is required, as is a track record of work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and the ability to work collaboratively are needed. Knowledge of museum practices and standards for packing, transportation, handling, and examination of works of art is essential; preference will be given to candidates with experience using TMS (The Museum System®, a collections management database by Gallery Systems).
