Reporting to the Associate Director for Communication and Information, the Manager of Art Information is responsible for the strategic direction and execution of the Museum’s art information activities and for the efficient flow of all art-related information -- including collections data access and preservation, digital retention, and open access policies -- within the Museum as well as external to the institution.
The Manger of Art Information plays a leading role in managing the Museum’s engagement with collaborative projects across the University, including with faculty and students, that leverage the Museum’s commitment to open access art information resources in support of the University’s mission. The Manager of Art Information also represents the Museum in cross-institutional initiatives that engage the wider museum and library communities, supporting the Museum’s status as a leader in the field of cultural heritage data.

Art Information Management
Managing a team of art information specialists and working in close collaboration with curators, registrars, educators, and others, the Manager of Art Information will ensure the continued development and maintenance of a well-documented program of standards, practices, and frameworks meant to sustain and continually improve the Museum’s ability to document the artworks held in its collections. Strategically, this position will take a leadership role in identifying institutional priorities as they pertain to art information, critically assessing and balancing the needs of diverse external audiences and internal stakeholders when considering new initiatives and allocating resources.

 

Personnel Management
The Head of Art Information is responsible for the supervision and professional support of four full-time employees as well as summer and academic interns. They will also collaborate with the Museum’s development department to conceive and write grants to support ongoing projects. This role is also responsible for advancing the strategic integration of Art Information priorities into other Museum activities, especially the planning processes for the new building galleries and exhibitions and the Museum’s long-term strategic planning process (every five years).

This role, along with all other managers in the organization, will be expected to develop and implement strategies for advancing the Museum’s objectives around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

 

Budget
This position will be responsible for annual and long-term management of the budgets supporting all art information programs. In addition to participation in the annual budget planning process (and the related quarterly spending reviews to ensure responsible spending throughout the year), the Head of Art Information will collaborate with the departmental Associate Director on longer term budgeting exercises, particularly as related to the Museum’s new building project.



Essential Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities

  • Expertise in providing access to art information in a museum environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of museum cataloguing standards and best practices. In particular, a command of all aspects of data management, digital media, as well as data architecture and data exchange principles are required.
  • Strong communication skills are essential including the ability to initiate, prioritize, and collaborate across all levels of the museum and university.
  • Minimum seven years of experience managing complex museum information systems.
  • Minimum two years personnel management experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities

  • Master's degree.
  • Strong demonstrated organizational and planning skills, demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a complex, collaborative, and changing environment with diverse staff and users.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team context, establish priorities, and achieve goals.
