Job Summary

Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, manages the Access Services unit within the main libraries. Manages the Library Professionals and / or Library Assistants within that unit. Determines or recommends short-term strategy, policies, services, and programs for the library or unit. Responsibilities are defined by overall objectives and involve a high level of complexity in functional / subject area specialization.

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Library is a world-class facility that provides access to the world’s health sciences knowledge base, offers a wide variety of informal learning spaces, and provides innovative educational technology services to the UCSF community. We are currently seeking to fill the position of Manager of Access Services.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, this position provides leadership and coordination in developing, assessing, and sustaining the Library’s access services to support the teaching, research, and clinical activities of UCSF faculty, students, and staff. The Manager of Access Services contributes to the planning, policy formation, decision-making, and communication related to library access services and is expected to play a leadership role in articulating and executing an innovative and forward-looking vision for library support provided by this unit.
This position provides direct oversight for circulation, reserves, stack maintenance, and information desk staffing across Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Library locations. Collaborating with peers and colleagues internal and external to the Library, the Manager ensures the Access Services unit is a highly collaborative and dynamic team working cross-functionally across the organization. The Manager of Access Services supervises 4.5 – 5.5 FTE total staff as well as student worker staff.

The Access Services unit is the face of the libraries, primarily providing services from physical desks located within main library locations at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and ZSFG. The mission of Access Services is to connect patrons with services, resources, and spaces. Working with all units across the library, Access Services empowers the delivery of a high-quality, welcoming, inclusive, and user-centered experience across all services and virtual and physical spaces.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 7 years’ experience working in access services and/or public services units and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of Public/Access Services units core functions within libraries gained via experience and/or training in coordinating and providing one or more services (i.e. circulation, reserves, information services, etc.).
  • Strong management, supervisory and organizational leadership skills. Experience training and supporting staff in developing new skills to stay current with changing systems, workflows, services, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that encompass empathetic interpersonal, analytical, and organizational communication.
  • Ability to work independently as needed and excel at collaborative work both within and external to the library.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area and/ or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience coordinating schedules at public service desks and collaborating with peer leaders in providing strong services via physical desk staffing, asynchronous email/ticketing triage, etc.
  • Experience working in a health sciences library.
  • Experience with strategic outreach to develop and implement cross-functional collaborations that enhance service integrations and quality of support provided to patrons.
