Position Summary
Position is responsible for the marketing services for the Department of Genetics with a high priority on content development and electronic brand management. Overhaul the department’s existing website, restructuring and delivering new content in alignment with the vision of department leadership. Enhance social media presence and external visibility, especially for professional audiences. Advise and implement strategies to enhance internal and external communications. The Manager of Marketing Services reports to the Business Director of the Department of Genetics and is expected to work closely with the Department Chair, other researchers and lab members within the Department, other business office staff including technical specialists, and the broader campus media and public relations contacts. This position will also serve as the Department’s representative to the Medical School and with the University Public Affairs Office.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Electronic Marketing

  • Manages the redesign the Department’s web page as a key component of the Department’s overall marketing strategy.
  • Works with the technical department staff to update and maintain the web page.
  • Develops and implements strategy to establish and grow department’s social media presence, particularly for the audience of prospective new faculty.
  • Coordinates regular social content aligned with established strategy.

Content Development

  • Identifies and collects compelling source content and develop written and other visual content for website, social media, and other needs.
  • Develops and promotes department identity by establishing suggested common language related to the department’s history, philosophy, achievements and future goals.
  • Establishes structure for departments to share achievements and successes for all levels of employee from lead researchers to postdocs to staff and students.

Marketing and Communication Services

  • Identifies ways to enhance internal communication, aligned by department, building, or other stakeholder community, and serve as point person for updating methods as employees arrive and depart.
  • As new initiatives arise, develops suggested marketing plans and budgets to maximize returns.
  • Coordinates advertisements and media communication related to new faculty and other recruitment goals indicated by department leadership.

Media Relations and Representation

  • All of these functions are to performed in conjunction with the Medical School Public Affairs Office.
  • Serves as Communication Coordinator for the Department.
  • Serves as Liaison with Medical School Public Affairs, BJH and BJC Media offices.
  • Serves as information clearing house for developments in Research  activities passing on to Medical Public Affairs any information that could increase the Department’s local, national and international media coverage.
  • Maintains awareness of Stark regulations and comply with regulations in all referring relationship development activities.

Marginal or Non Essential Functions

  • Identifies opportunities to identify and establish contact with prospective new faculty members.
  • Promotes and maintains network of contacts with Washington University Medical Center and the University.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by your supervisor.


Preferred Qualifications

  •  Strong portfolio, with at least three years of professional experience, that demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in writing, editing and organizing content for digital communications/platforms.
  • Experience working through the entire lifespan (inception through site launch) of projects creating or redesigning websites.
  • Ability to work with a variety of websites that encompass multiple target audiences and business goals.
  • Direct experience with integrated digital marketing strategies, including the use of social media, to achieve communication goals.
  • Quality assurance of digital content, including written and visual; working effectively with website designers, developers and other digital marketing professionals; writing and editing user-friendly content for websites, particularly those focused on the sciences or health care and innovation.
  • Basic familiarity with photo editing and graphic design tools such as PhotoShop and InDesign and knowledge of social media and its integration into digital marketing strategies helpful.
  • Mastery of best practices of writing, editing and optimizing audience-focused content for the web.
  • Demonstrates expertise in Wordpress.
  • Experience in website user experience design.
  • Demonstrates skill creating user-centric information architecture for websites (card sorting, sitemaps, navigation paths, etc.).
  • Aptitude in prioritizing, adjusting, and managing multiple projects at various phases, simultaneously.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and desire to effectively adapt to new technologies and circumstances.
  • Knowledge of AP editorial style.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems.
  • Experience using digital analytics and measurement to inform decision making.
  • Ability to work independently and work in a team-based environment, while being able to communicate effectively with internal, external clients and team members.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field with five plus years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience totaling nine years.

Salary Range
$57,300.00 - $97,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
