Job Description

The Communications Manager leads marketing and communications efforts for ASU’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience (KER). This position plans, develops, produces, disseminates and evaluates creative, high quality and cost-effective communication and promotional materials for internal and external audiences, using strategies, formats and channels designed to achieve specific awareness and engagement goals. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, development and deployment of digital content and strategies for website and social media, project management and content creation for print products like the annual report, managing media relations, monitoring and reporting analytics, and assisting with miscellaneous needs related to graphic design and the capture, editing and use of audio/video/photographic content. Reports directly to the KER Assistant Director under the overall direction of the Executive Director and PI/Director.

Essential Duties

  • Works collaboratively with KER leadership to create communications strategy for all audiences and leads strategic communications planning for KER projects and initiatives.
  • Plans, develops, oversees and evaluates communications projects and campaigns to enhance KER’s information dissemination, marketing and fundraising, collaboratively creating content and ensuring consistency in messaging. 
  • Works with vendors and internal team members to coordinate messaging around KER activities, programs, events, milestones, engagement opportunities, research and community impact. 
  • Organizes media coverage, writing press releases and articles.
  • Oversees KER’s website, email marketing and social media accounts, identifying information needs and developing content to fill these, ensuring timely posting of news and events and continuously improving KER's digital strategies. 
  • Oversees production of print products.
  • Manages communications budget to implement high-impact communications projects.
  • Writes/edits copy, determines/edits layout, creates or sources visuals, and manages publication of for digital and print products.
  • Organizes video/audio recordings of events, providing editorial input to final products.
  • Interfaces with and conducts regular interviews with fellows, faculty, key stakeholders, project leads/managers and team members to develop content and proactively facilitate earned media coverage.
  • Tracks/analyzes social media, email and web analytics, and helps generate performance output updates. 
  • Engages with marketing and communications staff across ASU academic and business units to collaborate on campaigns, cross-promote and share best practices. 
  • Mentors and cross-trains other team members on communications tools and skills as needed/desired.
  • Maintains and adheres to ASU brand standards, including voice and tone. 
  • Organizes and maintains project archival system to provide for ease of access and use.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field AND five (5) years of experience in a public relations/marketing role; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in developing effective social media campaigns.
  • Experience using online platforms and tools including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Canva, Hootsuite and email marketing tools like Constant Contact.
  • Experience working with magazine or annual report style content and format.
  • Experience using editing and communications software including, but not limited to, InDesign, PhotoShop, PremierePro and AfterEffects.
  • Experience working in a higher education and/or executive environment.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a team setting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. 
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Department Statement

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) is the administrative home for this position.
