The Emory HSRB II Innovation Zone is designed to provide Emory-related startup companies with license to Emory intellectual property access to dedicated, flexible, and affordable laboratory infrastructure to develop, test, and grow life science business ideas and reach their milestones faster. It will also include a venue for industry partners to demonstrate their latest beta technologies to faculty. The HSRB II Innovation Zone will foster a community of entrepreneurship within the policy framework of Emory School of Medicine (ESOM) and ensure that the mission of these spaces track to the overall vision for HSRB II.

 

Biolocity, an Emory University & Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) life science incubator, was relaunched in 2015 in partnership with the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation to provide translational grant funding and life science product development expertise to academic stage assets with the goal of creating license opportunities and investor-ready start-ups at both Emory and Georgia Tech. Since 2015, Biolocity has funded 58 projects. These 58 projects have led to 22 start-ups, two industry licenses, four products on the market, and a 1:10 leverage on awarded funds to follow-on-funding. Biolocity has demonstrated the capability to identify, mentor, and develop opportunities with the ability to attract follow-on funding and partnership opportunities.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position is an Emory University School of Medicine (SOM) role reporting to the Associate Dean of Innovation in collaboration with Woodruff Health Sciences (WHSC) and Biolocity.

 

Management of Lab2Launch Facility

  • Manages the operational planning, compliance, and management of the activities associated with the Lab2Launch area within the Health Sciences Research Building II (HSRB II).
  • Manages Lab2Launch tenant relations, business development, and day-to-day activities; recruits, evaluates and sets up agreements with faculty-based startups.
  • Develops and maintains SOP and operating agreements in coordination with SOM leadership and guidance.
  • Carries out extensive market assessments to help evaluate the competitiveness of applicant projects.
  • In coordination with facilities staff, ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations as well as Emory University policies and procedures regarding environmental health and safety (EHSO) and, where appropriate, policies and procedures related to animal care, use of human subjects, embryonic stem cells, other biomaterials, etc.
  • Ensures proper documentation of insurance and other appropriate terms to ensure that the University is adequately protected from possible liability
  • Creates pipeline of Lab2Launch applicants and tenants through diverse marketing efforts internal and external to Emory.
  • Manages the Lab2Launch Budgeting, invoicing, and financial reporting to ensure the economic viability of the laboratory space. This also includes managing expenses and identifying opportunities for cost savings.

Programming for Lab2Launch

  • Assesses the programmatic needs of Lab2Launch tenants.  Builds, buys, or collaborates with Emory Innovation ecosystem programmatic supports to meet these needs where possible.
  • Serves as a navigator and advocate for faculty-based start-ups to connect and arrange the delivery of services, including but not limited to, ensuring the understanding of accountability and expectations of milestones, providing mentorship with knowledge of successes from experience in innovation/new company partnerships, provides timely resolution for all needs, and advocates and build relationships with new and existing users (internal and external).
  • Develops relationships with service providers (contract research organizations, legal, etc.) to build a vetted list of subsidized and/or recommended services for Lab2Launch tenants.
  • Coordinates operational activities and procurement of necessary resources with institutional partners including, but not limited to, space and facilities, Emory Integrated Core Facilities, communications, and event management departments/units.

Biolocity Support

  • Provides programmatic support of Biolocity, a joint Emory/Georgia Tech Program that provides a combination of funding, project management, and consulting resources to early-stage technologies that address an unmet clinical need, have a compelling commercial potential and the ability to impact patient health.
  • Maintain operational and communication links with the Biolocity leadership including recommendation and review of Biolocity funded groups entering Lab2Launch and visa-versa.

Reporting and Collaboration

  • Understands and works collaboratively across the Emory University and Biolocity organizations to accomplish the mission of Lab2Launch.
  • Leads the partnership with School of Medicine (SOM) Core leaders and SF&A on coordination of facility and core needs to support Lab2Launch or Biolocity programs. 
  • Provides SOM/Biolocity/Woodruff Health Science Center (WHSC) leadership with regular updates on each faculty-based start-up and an annual review against milestones for startups.
  • Participates in meetings and presentations in entrepreneurial education and regular program operation meetings.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field (preferably life sciences), business or law and five years of venture/accelerator and entrepreneurial business development experience, including marketing, communications, and management or comparable experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific field (preferably life sciences), business or law.
  • Experience in the technology industry, research, and/or academic medicine environments and experience with research lab environment compliance and oversight.
  • Excellent technical writing skills and knowledge of appropriate language for use agreements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate complex situations with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience working with leadership and researchers of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team.

 

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work.  Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
