Description of Work Unit
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is one of several units within International Programs and fosters the education and development of over 2,000 international students, scholars, and faculty from over 100 countries, to enable them to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals and objectives. ISSS team members provide advice, counseling, and advocacy on immigration, cultural, financial, academic, and personal concerns, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. Immigration services include immigration documentation and advising to nonimmigrant visa bearers at Colorado State University, as well as permanent residency processing for individuals in positions of permanent employment with the University. ISSS also supports a campus environment conducive to international education and intercultural awareness via educational, social, and cross-cultural programs for students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Position Summary
The Manager for International Student Advising Services is responsible for ensuring that international students and scholars have an outstanding advising experience when interacting with the International Programs team. The Manager is responsible for ensuring a welcoming atmosphere in the Global Advising Center of Laurel Hall; developing easy access to information on the ISSS website; manageing video and email communications; enabling easy access to advisors through virtual and in-person appointments; training ISSS advisors as well as professional and student team members; and assessing customer and advising services.
The Manager supervises the ISSS front desk reception team in Laurel Hall. The position is the lead trainer for front desk team members on ISSS needs and oversees international student service scheduling, both in-person and virtual. As the Laurel Hall front desk is shared with Education Abroad, the Manager is expected to collaborate closely with the Education Abroad team to ensure that the needs of all visitors to Laurel Hall are well served. The Manager develops proper assessment tools to ensure that the goals for customer service and high-quality advising services are being met.
The Manager also serves as an international student advisor and is responsible for delivering high quality advising services. The position develops international student advising strategies and supports the development of processes and procedures for international students across the campus. The Manager will have regular contact with academic and administrative leaders across CSU regarding international student services.
The position will support other initiatives and responsibilities of the ISSS and International Programs teams. The Manager may serve on campus committees, may engage with local volunteer organizations, and will have other opportunities to support a variety of activities and programs across campus and within larger professional networks.
This is a full-time administrative professional position reporting to the Associate Director of International Student Services.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Four years of student-centered advising experience working with F and J visa regulations and procedures
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of people at all levels of an organization, including culturally diverse communities
  • Mastery of immigration regulations affecting F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident status in order to serve as a Designated School Official for F-1 visa purposes and as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the Exchange Visitor Program.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. International Programs cannot sponsor a visa for this position

  • Manage efforts to ensure a welcoming advising atmosphere in the Global Advising Center of Laurel Hall.
  • Guide efforts of the international student services team to meet the needs of CSU’s vibrant and growing international student community.
  • Lead initiatives appropriate for a Manager in the Office of International Programs and with the International Student and Scholar Services team. This includes participation in appropriate meetings and committees, active support for advancing strategic priorities, and demonstrating a commitment to engaged leadership across the division.
  • Hire, supervise, and train the ISSS front desk professional staff team and front desk student team members. Collaborate closely with the Education Abroad team and International Programs colleagues on all Global Advising Center and front desk needs.
  • Provide initial support for international student advisors as they encounter difficult student immigration cases.
  • Lead training for all new international student advising professionals and provide ongoing mentorship and support to the ISSS advising team.
  • Manage the international student advisor schedule, centered on in-person advising, open advising, and remote advising options.
  • Manage the front desk Laurel Hall service schedule, including student team members, and back-up professional team members across International Programs.
  • Lead international student advising services assessment efforts, assessing relevant international student interactions and services provided by the ISSS team. Student satisfaction surveys will be administered by the Manager.
  • Oversee the assessment findings and make recommendations to leadership on enhancements to customer service, advising service, and other programs and services that provide international students with the best possible experience.
  • Responsible for completing the IIE Open Doors annual report.
  • Actively support special projects that enhance advising efficiencies and effectiveness. Examples include development of new online print and video-based resources, new strategic communication tools highlighting key international student deadlines, as well as a revamped ISSS website that clearly directs students and campus stakeholders to the information they need.

  • Serve as a Designated School Official for the F-1 student program of the Department of Homeland Security and Alternate Responsible Officer for the Department of State J-1 visa program. Evaluate required documentation and issue immigration documents for international students.
  • Maintain knowledge and stay current on changing F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations, research specific regulations as necessary to inform immigration decisions, extend derivative immigration benefits to nonimmigrant visa holders, and maintain University compliance with federal law and regulations.
  • Work within a number of database systems to facilitate effective implementation of immigration advising, document processing, and reporting, including, but not limited to, Sunapsis, Banner, and Slate.
  • Advise international students on a variety of immigration matters, including maintaining legal immigration status, document processing, and employment authorization.
  • Advise international students on their overall student experience, including navigation of the CSU system to maximize their University experience, cultural adjustment, academic issues, and personal and family issues.
  • Participate in and help lead team decisions on immigration/office policies and individual cases that present difficulty.
  • Provide guidance to offices across campus on how to work with international students in accordance with their immigration status and cultural norms, to include presentations on cross-cultural adjustment, supporting international students, enrollment requirements, ISSS services, and immigration regulations.
  • Implement or assist with programs such as orientation; cultural and educational events for students, faculty and staff; and community activities, including programs for special populations within the international student community.
  • Serve on appropriate committees within ISSS, International Programs, and across campus.
