Provide for the supervision of all clinical procedures conducted within the Genetics/Genomics laboratories. Provide input to the development of goals and plans for assigned laboratory. Assist in the preparation and administration of laboratory budget necessary to attain agreed upon goals. Oversight in the development, recommendation, and administration of technical policies, procedures, and standards; communicate sectional as well as departmental and Hospital policies and procedures to staff and ensure compliance.

Human resource management: 
Ensure the successful completion of operational requirements with appropriate assignments to ensure adequate staffing and an efficient workflow. 
Provide professional advice and direction to laboratory personnel concerning the more complex/sensitive tests and problems encountered; adapt methods and equipment to correct problems. 
Oversight of all educational activities.
Assist with development and evaluation of new laboratory tests and techniques; consider cost, speed, and accuracy factors before recommending.

Hospital usage: 
Ensure the accurate and timely completion of testing; correlate test results with patient diagnosis and identify conflicting or unusual test results and determine if retesting is required.
Oversight of maintenance of equipment to maximize operational efficiency and accuracy of laboratory equipment.
Requisition stock items and confer with vendors regarding new and improved products and services. Participate in the evaluation of new equipment and products affiliated with laboratory services.
Participate in the development of standards and procedures necessitating integration of laboratory services into clinical practice and in the resolution of specific laboratory problems; serve as a technical resource for others.
Remain abreast of development in the science of Medical Genetics, particularly those related to area of specialization, and attend educational programs including regional and national seminars and symposia as indicated.
Maintain records related to work group performance, efficiency, and expenditures, and prepare or assist in the preparation of related records and reports; conduct or participate in the analysis of operational problems.
Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.



Job Summary

Directs daily laboratory operations of a division, department, function, or program. Conducts and manages quality assurance and quality control and instructs staff on quality control and analytical procedures. Develops complex design projects and laboratory procedures and evaluates new products. Writes grant applications and manuscripts independently. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations.


Essential Functions 

Analytical ability necessary to develop, analyze, and update test standards and procedures, administer quality control program, assist with resolution of most complex technical problems, evaluate test results, and so forth. Interpersonal skills necessary to facilitate daily interaction with physicians, patients, nursing personnel, and representatives of outside agencies.

Supervisory skill necessary to organize, direct, and control the activities of a staff of technical and professional personnel; preparing specimens and cultures, conducting clinical tests, calculating test formula/controls, and interpreting and recording test results.


Physical Effort 

The ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. 

The ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification 1 year management experience required. An earned doctoral degree with 2 or more years postdoctoral training or Master's degree in an area of basic or applied science with 5 or more years' experience in clinical molecular diagnostics or cytogenetics is preferred. 1 year management experience required. Certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics or Molecular Biology through examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists [ASCP)] is preferred.
Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Work Arrangement On-Campus: Teams that work on campus, in an office, or in a lab.
