Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five years of related experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs, or other related area.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.

  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented. 

  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment. 

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements:

  • Position will require occasional evening and weekend hours.

  • May require occasional travel.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of academic achievement, progress towards degree, and probation requirements based on University student rules, college policies, and program specific requirements set by the leadership of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management for Advising Center - Ensures achievement of department goals by providing resources, supervision, training, and guidance to academic advisors for advising current and prospective undergraduate students in areas concerning college admission, readmission, professional concerns, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, course schedules, career and educational goals. Develops, implements, oversees, and directs advising activities, programs, policies, and procedures for center. Reviews, recommends, and implements operational changes, policy changes, and process changes.  Directs the preparation of reports for department heads on request. Responsible for requesting supplies for advising center; plans and directs workflow, investigates complaints and resolves problems, coordinates training for new advisors along with Assistant Director; acts as additional manager review on advisors performance reviews; biweekly meetings of the center. Serves on Department, College and University Committees in the development and implementation of academic, recruitment, retention and related initiatives. Meets regularly with college leadership, departmental leadership, and staff in the Department of Communication to ensure up-to-date information is provided from faculty and staff to advising center.

  • Academic Advising and Processes in the Department of Communication - Coordinates departmental advising and delivers academic advice to undergraduate students pursuing a degree or minor in the Department of Communication. This includes the following areas: college admission/readmission, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, study abroad opportunities, course planning and selection, educational and career goals. Advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action; reviews degree plans with students; processes add/drop, Q‐drops, withdrawal questions, change of curriculum, course substitutions (Undergraduate Adjustment System); establishes and monitors student probationary terms as necessary. Advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety and study skills; refers students to University resources for students with disabilities, writing assistance, and counseling. Uses Compass for checking student records and processing changes. Reviews and approves degree plans submitted through the Student Degree Planner system for undergraduate students. Interacts with faculty and serves as a resource person to provide an exchange of information and to enhance the advising of students.

  • Program Administration - Designs, refines and administers the Department of Communication Success Initiative to include recruitment, mandatory advising for FTIC, and transfer students. Conducts sophomore programming, first generation 'care watch,' Degree Checkup program, career programming, and graduating senior survey. Assigns success initiative tasks to advising staff. Administers required minor compliance. Administers optional certificate program.

  • Prospective and New Student Advising - Meets with incoming majors during new student conferences (orientation). Coordinates conference information with the dean’s office and facilitates departmental tasks at each conference. Provides information and resources to prospective undergraduate students, parents, and other university officials. Attends college and university recruiting events and programs; develops and implements recruitment strategies; meets with freshmen and transfer students during new student conferences; meets with readmitted students to facilitate re‐entry into the university and creating a degree plan. Assists with various recruiting efforts set by the College of Arts & Sciences.

  • Support of College-wide Initiatives  -Assists the director of advising in the College of Arts & Sciences with degree requirements, adjustments, curricular exceptions, study abroad approvals, and general advising of prospective and currently enrolled students. Other areas include assisting with the hiring, training, coaching, and performance evaluations of academic advising. Performs other duties as assigned.
