Job Summary
The Field Unit Manager of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Prevention (HEIP) is responsible for managing infection prevention activities in the clinical spaces at UCSF Health. Under the direction of the Director, and in coordination with the HEIP Medical Directors, the Manager provides clinical expertise, leadership, planning, organization and general management for the Field Team. This includes but is not limited to:
- Managing activities related to the clinical Infection Prevention program for adult and pediatric populations at Parnassus, Mount Zion, Mission Bay, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute and Ambulatory Services
- Ensuring accurate and timely reporting of all legally reportable communicable diseases
- Managing clinical activities for institutional compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation Infection Prevention and associated standards for the hospital and laboratory programs and other certifications, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reporting regulations, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation (CoP) for Hospitals, Transplant Services, and ESRD
- Managing the Field Team personnel and assets within budget
- Ensuring institutional infection prevention-related readiness for epidemic and pandemic responses
- Developing partnership with and Interfacing with all levels of the organization
- Publicly representing UCSF Health HEIP in institutional and public forums
- Liaising with the local Department of Public Health and the state Healthcare Associated Infections program
- Recruiting and developing highly skilled, diverse and engaged Field Team members

Department Description
The Field Unit Manager of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Prevention (HEIP) is responsible for managing infection prevention activities in the clinical spaces at UCSF Health. Under the direction of the Director, and in coordination with the HEIP Medical Directors, the Manager provides clinical expertise, leadership, planning, organizational and operational management for the Field Team. It is the Manager’s responsibility to, among other specified duties, develop and implement the annual Infection Prevention plan; effect institutional readiness for responding to communicable diseases urgencies/emergencies, regulatory and accreditation surveys; publicly represent UCSF in institutional and public forums; recruit, hire, develop and retain excellent team members.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Public Administration or other health-related field
- Certification in Infection Prevention
- Three (3) years of experience in infection prevention management
- Demonstrates expertise in and knowledge of infection prevention, quality improvement methodologies, and management in an academic facility
- Demonstrates project management, interpersonal, and communications skills to effectively convey information in writing and verbally, and a strong commitment to teamwork, quality, and achievement of objectives
- Demonstrates ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and assign work
- Demonstrates leadership and fiscal management skills, with the ability to create a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives
- Demonstrates analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with ability to identify and address system vulnerabilities
- Demonstrates leadership, interpersonal, and communications skills to promote, support, and introduce infection prevention systems and processes across a broad spectrum of departments
- Demonstrates knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments
- Demonstrates the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff, management, and outside personnel, with the ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others
- Serves local and national professional organizations in leadership roles
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical license in a healthcare-related field
