Salary Range: $68,266 - $111,426/year - final salary based on experience

JOB DUTIES
Manage and instruct the work of technical support personnel (including students) performing a variety of standard and specialized research or medical diagnostic tests. Instruct and manage students rotating through the laboratory.

Plan and develop of quality control procedures for the laboratory, including record keeping/reporting and scheduling, as necessary.

Manage laboratory, lab equipment, supplies, and handling/disposal of infectious materials and hazardous chemicals and materials. Direct the provision, installation, and maintenance of equipment to ensure optimal condition, superior value, adequate specifications, safety, and infection control standards. Troubleshoot specialized and routine laboratory equipment and perform limited maintenance, as necessary.

Perform highly specialized or complex procedures in the laboratory as necessary and perform more routine tests as necessitated by personnel shortages.

Write and update policies and procedures for the accreditation process. Ensure all laboratory certifications, licensure, and accreditation are maintained and in compliance with all appropriate regulatory and accreditation requirements applicable to the laboratory environment being managed.

Interview, hire, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

Prepare annual budget, goals, and objectives. Demonstrate expertise in goal setting, key financial indicators, budget development and monitoring, expense reduction/productivity enhancement, and financial/statistical analysis.

Lead the exploration and expansion of dermatopathology services to external customers. Manage contract implementation and performance, including technical support of client registration, interfacing, and report delivery.

Manage the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage and continuity of care.

Monitor and oversee time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely approval for payroll purposes.

May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Computer literacy

 

Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other science focus. Individuals who have qualified as a medical technologist by February 28, 1992 may substitute an associate's degree.
  • Five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • One of the following certification:
    • Medical Technologist (MT) by ASCP or AMT,
    • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS or IMLS) by ASCP or AMT
    • Categorical or specialist technologist (such as Chemistry, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist, Microbiology, Blood Banking, Molecular Biology) by ASCP or AMT
    • Certified Point of Care Professional (CPP) by AACC 
    • Clinical Laboratory Technologist by former Dept of Health Education & Welfare (HEW/HHS).

 

Preferred Qualifications
One (1) year of supervisory or administrative experience.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
