Organizational Unit Overview
University Communication translates ECU’s message into strategic and compelling communication and campaigns through the university web site, news releases, its official social media, East magazine, storytelling, production of promotional videos and video news stories along with infographics, creation and development of promotional brochures, and annual reports. The purpose is to provide strategic communication and marketing guidance and support to increase the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and support of the University and its work with broad and varied constituencies, from prospective students to identified thought leaders to prospective donors.
Through ECU News Services, University Communications performs media relations, public affairs, internal communication, and strategic communication work on behalf of the university and reports and disseminates information about events, activities, research, policies, individuals and alumni of the University, both through the media, videos, ecu.edu, the university website and through owned publications and other forums.
Through Creative Services, University Communications works with all university departments to conceptualize, design, develop, and produce written, audio-visual, digital and print projects to brand, communicate, and market their messages to appropriate audiences. Creative Services also provides strategic marketing advice for the university, including performing advertising buys for the university.
Job Duties
The Communications Manager is responsible for planning and coordinating communication strategies that advance the Brody School of Medicine’s mission and research enterprise and that tell the full story of the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM), including its leadership, community, vision, initiatives, and priorities. The Communications Manager collaboratively works with the ECU Health Marketing and Communications team and supports integrated communications about BSOM across the ECU Health ecosystem.
The Communication Manager position will develop and implement internal and external communication strategies for the Brody School of Medicine constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community leaders and supporters, potential students, and faculty recruitment. This position promotes a positive, factual public image among the various audiences and chooses the best source to disseminate information internally and externally in collaboration with colleagues and leadership.
This position will report directly to the VP of Marketing and Communications for ECU Health with a dotted line to the ECU Chief Communications Officer/Director of University Communications. Keeping a focus on BSOM’s mission, this position will work in concert with ECU Health Marketing and Communications and University Communications senior leadership. This position will advise BSOM deans and other senior leaders regarding reputational issues.
70% Strategic Communications Planning, Execution
  • Provides strategic communication strategy to Brody School of Medicine senior leadership working in tandem with ECU Health Marketing and Communications regarding joint issues.
  • Provides strategy on best channels to effectively deliver messages and facilitates regular communications on behalf of the Brody School of Medicine leadership team and coordinates internal communications using a wide variety of resources.
  • This position will collaborate with ECU Health Marketing and Communications and University Communications to perform media relations, public affairs, internal communication and strategic communication work on behalf of the university and will report and disseminate information about events, activities, research, policies, individuals and alumni of the university, university-produced publications and other forums.
  • Manage brand reputation of the Brody School of Medicine through new and innovative uses of electronic media to support the mission of the Brody School of Medicine and East Carolina University.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for internal Brody School of Medicine marketing requests and will work with ECU Health Marketing and Communications or University Communications Marketing to determine appropriate response/approach.

25% Communications Development
  • Identify, write and edit articles and other content for news and promotional materials applicable to a variety of communication methods that support the development and execution of communications for the Brody School of Medicine and ECU Health related initiatives. Advise the Brody Dean/CEO of ECU Health, Executive Dean, and other senior leadership on cohesive communication strategies and implementation.
  • Serves as point of contact for media inquiries related to the Brody School of Medicine; works with ECU Health Marketing and Communications to coordinate the appropriate response – either written or an interview.
  • Coordinate interviews and media responses, coaching administrators, faculty and staff on how to best respond to inquiries and writing speci`ic talking points and responses as needed.
  • Identify and coordinate visuals for optimum coverage outcomes.
  • Conduct proactive media relations for selected events or activities, including identifying major positive narratives and sharing outside local media markets whenever possible and ensuring messaging and responses are reflective of broader organizational objectives.

5% Other Duties
  • This position will also be a member of ECU’s emergency response team. Those duties include crafting and sending ECU alerts and providing public updates during weather or public safety emergencies. This position will work in tandem with ECU Health Marketing and Communications and ECU News Services during an emergency to coordinate messaging as appropriate.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Master’s degree in marketing, English/journalism, or a related communications field preferred.
  • 3 years of marketing, communications, media or public relations experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Windows and Mac operating systems, HTML, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple individuals and manage several projects at once.
