About the Department
The Department of Biology has 30 faculty members, 10 staff members, and approximately 400 undergraduate and 35 graduate students. Undergraduate Biology students will major in one of three concentrations: Biomedical, Cell, and Molecular Biology, Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology, or Microscopy. Regardless of concentration, all students take the same five foundational biology courses: BIO 111 (Foundations of Evolution and Diversity), BIO 112 (Foundations of Cell Biology), BIO 211 (Foundations of Genetics), BIO 212 (Foundations of Form and Function), and BIO 213 (Foundations of Ecology). All the foundational level courses have associated labs. After these five foundational courses, students will take upper-level specialty courses.
The Department of Biology occupies two buildings. Brooks Hall is our original building that we still use for teaching lecture and lab courses, and is near our greenhouse. The Biosciences Building opened in 2016 and contains state-of-the-art equipment, research spaces, and learning environments. The Biosciences Building also houses our vivarium, microscopy facility, herbarium, and stockroom.
