Summary

To perform and communicate results of both diagnostic and screening mammograms and/or breast ultrasound exams including performing mammogram and/or ultrasound guidance while assisting in breast procedures. The breast imaging technologist is responsible for independent operation of the mammographic and/or sonographic equipment.

The breast imaging technologist is responsible for the daily operations of breast mammograms and/or ultrasounds and procedures. Monitoring/ensuring equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures and ongoing assessment to ensure quality is a critical function of this position. Or to perform mammography related procedures by operating X-ray equipment to make images of designated areas and evaluate the technical quality of images.

Responsibilities*
  •          Independently perform clinical assessment and breast mammogram and/or sonography examinations with minimal supervision
  •          Demonstrates mammography and/or sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to patient for anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images.
  •          Demonstrates independent judgment to acquire the optimum breast imaging information in each examination performed.
  •          Demonstrates ability to evaluate images for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded and correct imaging protocol is followed.
  •          Demonstrates ability to operate mammographic and/or sonographic equipment effectively
  •          Demonstrates ability to consistently acquire high quality images, demonstrates overall excellent quality work
  •          Demonstrate ability to evaluate and communicate breast information to the attending physician.
  •          Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with the patient and health care team, recognizing the special needs of each patient.
  •          Or performs mammography exams and procedures which may take between 15 to 90 minutes.

Required Qualifications*

Active certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS, BR) in Breast

or

Active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT, BS) with advanced certification in Breast Ultrasound

Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for Breast Ultrasound.

Current BCLS Certification

Ultrasound Technologist:

  •          Graduation from an ultrasonographic training program is necessary.
  •          Graduation from a School of Radiologic Technology is desirable.
  •          Some knowledge of human anatomy is desirable.
  •          Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology is necessary.
  •          Registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is necessary.
  •          This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Mammography Technologist:

  •          Graduation from a school of radiologic technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  •          Registration by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is necessary.
  •          Certification in Diagnostic Mammography is necessary.
  •          This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Background Screening
