Mammography Tech

This Full-Time position will be located at the new Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center Arringdon in Morrisville, NC.

The ambulatory surgery center is staffed by surgeons, anesthesiologists, specialized nurses and other health care providers who are there before, during, and after procedures. The facility has four operating rooms and four procedure rooms, 24 patient stations for preoperative and postoperative nursing care, and a seven-bed overnight unit.

General Description of the Job Class

Perform a variety of technical activities associated with the performance of screening and diagnostic mammography procedures within the Ambulatory Radiology Division. 

This position must support the Ambulatory Radiology Division and perform other duties as assigned and supported by scope of practice. Perform other related duties incidental to the work therein.

This position will provide coverage to multiple Screening Mammography locations off-campus in Wake and/or Durham Counties within the Ambulatory Imaging Division.    

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Perform a variety of tasks involving the operation of mammographic radiographic equipment and other equipment/devices as appropriate. Adjust equipment for proper radiographic exposure techniques in accordance with radiation safety guidelines.

Demonstrate proficiency in performing all breast imaging procedures per established protocols, policy, and patient safety standards and does not require assistance from fellow technologists.

Ensure customer satisfaction and appropriateness of care for all assigned patients. Thoroughly explains the procedures to patients and allows time for questions and addresses concerns in a professional and kind manner.

Assume responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in our care.

Position patients for each anatomical view using positioning assistance devices and protective equipment as necessary.

Perform as a self-starter and takes the initiative to proactively address situations before they arise or escalate.

Demonstrate the ability to multi-task as needed and communicate in a positive and efficient matter.

Communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of mammography examinations and patient's needs.

Maintain adequate supplies; allowing for lead time when placing orders

Perform the quality control functions related to mammography and notify appropriate personnel when issues arise and maintenance is required.  Continually evaluate images for diagnostic quality.

Ensure safety is a top priority.  Addresses safety concerns immediately and proactively works to identify and mitigate safety risks within the working environment.

Maintain ALARA principles for patients, staff, and self

Assist in maintenance and compilation of statistical data.

Ensure regulatory guidelines are adhered to and maintain appropriate records.

Understand and use the Image Archival System

Complete exam tracking/billing and charge reconciliation accurately on a daily basis and is able to modify orders per protocol.

Provide orientation and training to new Mammographers.

Assist with the daily operations of the Mammography department across the Ambulatory Platform.

Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.

Establish and maintain productive ethical working relationships with coworkers, referring providers and commercial agencies.

Coordinate with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.

Required Qualifications at this Level


Education:

Graduate of a 24-month AMA approved School of Radiologic Technology.

Technologists initially qualifying on or after April 28, 1999, must meet the Mammo-Specific requirements by having at least 40 hours of documented training in mammography.


Experience:

Level I

Must obtain ARRT certification within one year of employment.

Performance of a minimum of 25 mammography exams under direct supervision of an appropriate MQSA qualified individual. At least 8 hours of training in using any modality (e.g., digital) before beginning to use that modality independently.

Level II

Minimum of two years' experience as a Mammography technologist. Must perform at least 200 mammography examinations in a 24 month period.

Level III

A minimum of 4 years' experience within specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion


Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

ARRT certification in radiography

ARRT advanced certification in mammography

FDA/MQSA qualified to include meeting the MQSA CE requirements of at least 15 CEUs in a 36 month period that must include at least 6 CEUs in each mammographic modality used.

BLS certification
