The Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a Makerspace Technician/Assistant Design Studio Manager who will provide assistance and operational oversight to the department’s Design Studio (DS) and associated laboratories/spaces.

The individual will work closely with the DS Manager to maintain a state-of–the–art design facility and lab spaces. The position will involve mentoring of student design teams, working closely with faculty and staff, organizing events, meetings, and workshops, setting up and maintaining undergraduate course labs, as well as providing technical knowledge regarding a wide variety of manufacturing processes and techniques.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the management the overall operations of the Design Studio (DS), including space and equipment utilization.
  • Take charge of specifications, design, implementation, and modifications for DS-related projects.
  • Develop efficient and secure equipment usage procedures, schedules, and checklists.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot DS equipment, ensuring smooth operation for courses.
  • Assist in supervising building maintenance and access permissions for Clark Hall.
  • Conduct laboratory safety inspections and ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Prepare and maintain regulatory documentation for laboratory areas.
  • Coordinate equipment procurement, service contracts, and supply ordering.
  • Provide technical training and support to students on DS equipment and resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty on workshops and prototyping activities.
  • Assist with setup and takedown of biological-based lab experiments.
  • Manage resource utilization, plan future equipment needs, and develop budgets.
  • Collaborate with financial staff on expenditure tracking and reviews.
  • Oversee inventory management for tools and materials in DS and associated spaces.
  • Assist in the management of part-time student workers.

Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
  • Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
  • Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus (EX: paper supply box, laboratory equipment, animal feed). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited.
  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
  • Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs). 

Physical Requirements 

  • The candidate must be able to lift 50lbs and move heavy items around with relative frequency.
  • Candidate must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Candidate must feel comfortable working with diverse body of students, staff and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on prototyping, testing, and design experience.
  • Knowledge of wet/biological laboratory setup and protocols.
  • Machine shop operations (mills, lathes, CNC machinery, etc.).
  • Rapid prototyping (3D printing, FDM, Material jetting).
  • Engineering design and processes.
  • Electronics, circuitry, microprocessors, mechatronics/robotics.
  • Biological/wet laboratory management.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Initiative to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in scheduling and productivity software (Google Calendar, Outlook, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.
