Named in 2020, Bowers CIS is at the forefront of today’s most important areas of scientific inquiry. As a Major Gift Officer your primary responsibility will be to generate philanthropic investment to support the college’s growth strategy. We seek an innovative and collaborative professional who can identify and cultivate major donors and expand our donor base by developing new high-potential donors.
Working closely with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Affairs, you will be part of a high-performing team committed to the advancement of the college’s educational mission and aspirations for societal impact. Your work will contribute to our efforts to secure Cornell University’s excellence in research, teaching and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects with the capacity to make commitments of $250K-$10M. Work closely with the university’s Discovery Team to identify and qualify new potential major gift donors. Develop an annual work plan for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of the assigned prospects to include:
A minimum of 100 personal visits or significant personal contacts each year as either a participant or facilitator;
Solicitation of an annual fund gift for each prospect, either through a personal visit or solicitation by a volunteer or as part of the Annual Fund’s programs;
Completion of 12-15 major gift solicitations each year and closure of 8-10 gifts; more precise goals to be established each year using the Major Gift Officer Success Matrix.
Prepare effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for prospects sometimes involving other colleagues within development as well as faculty, deans, alumni affairs officers, senior administrators, and volunteers.
Direct the preparation of presidential and deans’ correspondence and briefings.
Work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities, develop funding proposals, and negotiate and structure complex gifts to the university.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
5+ years of relevant experience in development, alumni and volunteer engagement, and communications/marketing, or an equivalent combination.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proven organizational skills
Able to prioritize multiple projects/assignments under pressure with extremely tight deadlines
Good judgement
Strong listening and relationship building skills
Results oriented, proactive
Commitment to securing philanthropic support to advance Cornell’s higher education mission
Comfort and facility with building remote relationships using virtual platforms
Travel and some evenings and weekends work will be required
