Description

The maintenance Worker I position performs and/or assists in the repair, maintenance, construction, and remodel of grounds, buildings, equipment, and infrastructure by completing a variety of manual and skilled labor tasks. This position will work independently, and sometimes in a support role to the ground’s supervisor, campus carpenter, custodial staff, and Plant technicians as required under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.  This person must also be able to work with and supervise student workers.

The job requirements place an emphasis on general carpentry skills as that is the skill set most often in demand for independent work or in support of existing campus carpenter.

Requirements

·         Possess a fundamental understanding of safe work practices as is typical in a maintenance or construction environment.

·         Needs to have considerable knowledge of appropriate maintenance techniques, standard practices, methods and in the use of materials, tools, and equipment of the skilled craft trades.

·         Must possess good verbal and written communications skills to be able to follow and give instructions.

·         Attention to detail and a strong customer service orientation is preferred.  Communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a variety of students, guests, staff, faculty, and others.

·         Must have the ability to read construction prints and drawings.

·         Must be able to physically perform duties. Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.

·         Required to use fingers and hands to handle materials and tools or equipment and reach with hands and/or arms.

·         Able to occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds with or without assistance.

Preferred

·         Should be willing to take on new tasks and learn new skills.
